Whistleblower 'would not' put family on Boeing 787 jet

Boeing is expected to face criticism at a US Senate hearing from a whistleblower who says he feared its planes could fall apart mid-air.

Engineer Sam Salehpour told NBC News he had raised concerns about the 787 Dreamliner, which Boeing dismissed.

The company is under scrutiny after a number of safety incidents, including a mid-air panel blow-out in January.

But it has sought to defend its practices, and says it is co-operating with the Senate inquiry. read more
Ukraine warns of WW3 ahead of long-stalled Congress aid vote

Ukraine's prime minister has told the BBC there will be a "Third World War" if Ukraine loses its conflict with Russia, as he urged the US Congress to pass a long-stalled foreign aid bill.

Denys Shmyhal expressed "careful optimism" that US lawmakers would pass the hotly contested measure, which has $61bn (£49bn) earmarked for Kyiv.

The House of Representatives is set to vote on the package this Saturday.

The proposal includes funding for Israel as well as the Indo-Pacific. read more
Dubai airport re-opens after UAE suffers heavy rain

Operations at Dubai International Airport remain severely disrupted after heavy rains battered the United Arab Emirates and neighbouring countries.

The storm pounded the UAE on Tuesday, flooding roads and the sections of the busy international airport.

Flash floods have now killed 20 people in Oman and one in the UAE.

Some inbound flights have resumed on Thursday, but on the whole Dubai international airport, a major travel hub, is struggling to function. read more

Man held over Paris bomb threat at Iran consulate

Armed police have made an arrest after reports that a man was seen entering the Iranian consulate not far from the Eiffel Tower in Paris,

Elite officers from France's BRI intervention brigade surrounded the building after a witness saw a man apparently carrying a grenade or explosive vest.

French reports said the suspect eventually left the building.

A man was detained by police shortly after 14:45 (12:45 GMT). read more
A man who set himself on fire outside the Manhattan court where former President Donald Trump's hush-money trial is being held has died.

Maxwell Azzarello, 37, doused himself in a liquid before throwing conspiracy-theory pamphlets into the air.

It happened as the jury selection for Mr Trump's trial was completed.

He was taken to hospital on Friday in critical condition, where he later died, CBS News - the BBC's US partner - confirmed.

Mr Trump was in the building to attend jury selection, where he has had a security detail, but the former president left during the incident.

New York City police said early on Saturday that Mr Azzarello was declared dead by hospital staff, NBC reported. read more
Ukraine Russia war: US House passes crucial aid deal worth $61bn

The House of Representatives has finally approved billions of dollars in new US military aid for Ukraine as it struggles to resist Russia's invasion.

The much-delayed measure had vocal opponents in Congress and it took a fragile bipartisan deal to get the $61bn (£49bn) package through.

Now the focus shifts from "whether" to "when" lethal aid arrives, with reports suggesting it could begin within days.

Israel military intelligence chief quits over 7 October

The Israeli military's intelligence chief has resigned, saying he took responsibility for the failures before Hamas's attack on Israel on 7 October.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Major General Aharon Haliva would retire once his successor was selected.

He acknowledged in a letter that his intelligence directorate "did not live up to the task we were entrusted with".

He is the first senior figure to step down over the attack, which were the deadliest in Israel's history. read more
UN rights chief 'horrified' by mass grave reports at Gaza hospitals

The UN's human rights chief has said he is "horrified" by the destruction of Gaza's Nasser and al-Shifa hospitals and the reports of "mass graves" being found at the sites after Israeli raids.

Volker Türk called for independent investigations into the deaths.

Palestinian officials said they had exhumed 283 bodies at Nasser, some with their hands tied. It is not clear how they died or when they were buried.

Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction overturned by New York court

Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction has been overturned by New York's top court, on the basis that he did not receive a fair trial.

The Court of Appeals found that prosecutors were allowed to call witnesses whose accusations were not part of the charges against him.

Its ruling said that meant he was tried on past behaviour and not solely on the crimes he was charged with.

Weinstein, 72, will remain in prison for a separate conviction for rape. read more
Columbia campus protester apologises for 'kill Zionists' comments

A leader of students protesting the war in Gaza at Columbia University has apologised after video emerged of him saying "Zionists don't deserve to live".

Khymani James, 20, said he was "unusually upset" and "misspoke in the heat of the moment".

On Friday, Columbia announced that he had been banned from campus.

Protests which began at Columbia in New York City have since spread to campuses across the US. read more

Pentagon to 'rush' Patriot missiles to Ukraine in $6bn package

The Pentagon says it will "rush" Patriot air defence missiles and artillery ammunition to Ukraine as part of its new military aid package.

However Patriot systems for launching the missiles will not be sent, Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Patriots were "urgently" needed to face a growing Russian air threat and "can and should save lives right now".

On Saturday, Ukraine said Russia had carried out another massive air attack. read more

Hundreds more people were arrested at college campuses across the US on Saturday as student protests against the war in Gaza continue.

Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein was among those detained by police.

Protestors are demanding institutions boycott companies and individuals with ties to Israel.

But some Jewish students have complained about alleged antisemitism from some demonstrators. read more
Palestinian leader appeals to US to stop Israel's Rafah offensive

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says the US is the only country that can stop Israel from attacking Rafah, the southern Gaza city where more than a million people are taking refuge.

Mr Abbas, who runs parts of the occupied West Bank, said any attack could see Palestinians flee Gaza.

Israel has consistently vowed to carry out an offensive in Rafah.

US President Joe Biden "reiterated his clear position" on Rafah to Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu in a call on Sunday. read more

An Iranian teenager was sexually assaulted and killed by three men working for Iran's security forces, a leaked document understood to have been written by those forces says.

It has let us map what happened to 16-year-old Nika Shakarami who vanished from an anti-regime protest in 2022.

Her body was found nine days later. The government claimed she killed herself.

Israel accused of possible war crime over killing of West Bank boy

In the early afternoon of 29 November last year, several Palestinian boys descended on to their street in the occupied West Bank, where they often played together.

Minutes later, two of them lay dead from gunshots fired by Israeli soldiers - Basil, 15, and eight-year-old Adam.

Iran charges journalists after BBC report on teen protester's death

Iran's judiciary has filed charges against "a number of journalists and activists" after the publication of a BBC report alleging men working for the security forces sexually assaulted and killed a 16-year-old protester.

The judiciary-run Mizan news agency described the BBC Eye investigation into Nika Shakarami's death in 2022 as "fake, incorrect and full of mistakes".

It did not identify the individuals summoned for allegedly "disrupting the psychological security of society".

But two Iranian journalists who had commented on the report online said prosecutors had opened cases against them. read more
Turkey halts trade with Israel over 'humanitarian tragedy' in Gaza

Turkey has suspended all trade with Israel over its offensive in Gaza, citing the "worsening humanitarian tragedy" in the strip.

The Turkish trade ministry said the measures would be in place until Israel allowed an "uninterrupted and sufficient flow" of aid into Gaza.

Trade between the two countries was worth almost $7bn (£5.6bn) last year.

Israel-Gaza war: Ceasefire talks intensify in Cairo

Efforts have intensified to secure a deal for a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, with talks resuming in Cairo on Saturday.

Hamas said its delegation was travelling in a "positive spirit" after studying the latest truce proposal.

"We are determined to secure an agreement in a way that fulfils Palestinians' demands," it said.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said "taking the ceasefire should be a no-brainer" for the militant group. read more
Israel-Gaza ceasefire talks: Israel closes Kerem Shalom crossing as missiles fired from Gaza

Israel has closed the Kerem Shalom crossing with the Gaza Strip after 10 rockets were fired, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has said.

At least 10 people were injured in the attack by Hamas, Israeli media report.

The crossing is one of the few routes to get humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The attack comes as mediators in Egypt hold talks to broker a ceasefire - and to release Israeli hostages. Israel has said it will not accept Hamas's demands to end the Gaza war. read more
