1/ What is FARA? And why should every American care right now?

The Foreign Agents Registration Act (1938) is a transparency law. It requires anyone in the U.S. who is paid by or acts on behalf of a foreign government (or its agents) to register with the Department of Justice and publicly disclose:
Who’s paying them
How much
What they’re doing to influence American public opinion or policy

Simple goal:
Let Americans know when a message comes from a foreign power, not an independent voice.
No registration = potential crime.

2/ How it’s being gamed with influencers Big-following creators (podcasts, TikTok, Instagram, X) are the perfect vector. Foreign states don’t always need to “control” them outright. They can funnel money through shells, fake investors, or cutouts for videos/posts that just happen to align with the payer’s interests.

Classic case: Russia’s state media (RT) secretly paid nearly $10 million to a U.S. company (Tenet Media) to produce thousands of videos by American influencers. The content amplified U.S. divisions. The influencers said they were unaware and never registered under FARA. DOJ indicted the Russian operatives, not the creators, but the damage was done. This isn’t “free speech.” It’s undisclosed foreign influence buying airtime in American brains.

3/ The real harm:
Infiltration from within...
When foreign governments pay to shape what millions see online, they don’t need tanks or missiles. They erode trust, flip public opinion, and weaken our unity from the inside. During crises, it can turn Americans against our own military.

It sows doubt about U.S. actions abroad.

It makes us fight each other instead of external threats.

That’s not organic debate. That’s strategic sabotage of our democracy and national security.

Our troops and allies pay the price when public support collapses because of hidden propaganda.

4/ We’re seeing it right now with Iran Amid the just-concluded U.S.-Israel military operation against Iran (Operation Epic Fury, Feb–April 2026), reports are emerging of Iran-linked networks flooding U.S. social media with coordinated propaganda. Allegations include Iran state-affiliated actors and influencers pushing narratives that whitewash the regime, downplay threats, or undermine U.S. strikes, exactly when American forces were in harm’s way.

Some Western influencers have been accused of taking payments (or perks like trips) to promote IRGC-aligned messaging. Meta has already taken down Iran-linked fake-persona networks targeting Americans.

Whether direct payments or sophisticated influence ops, the pattern is clear: foreign state media exploiting our open platforms during active conflict.

5/ This is why FARA enforcement matters Transparency isn’t optional. If an influencer with hundreds of thousands (or millions) of followers is getting paid by Tehran, Moscow, Beijing, or anywhere else, we deserve to know.

No American should be manipulated into carrying water for a regime that’s shooting at our troops or allies.

Question every “independent” hot take that perfectly matches a foreign adversary’s talking points.

Our military deserves better than fighting a two-front war, one overseas and one in our own information space.
