Earlier you had had to know different technologies than today's to design and build HMIs.
By the way we will issue a short article on HMIs soon.

Earlier during our Mentorship program we discussed Carrer paths in Automation.

When you are in the beginning of your engineering path you may come to plant and amaze how systems and configurations behind it are big and complicated.
This also may frustrate you on thoughts how endless is what you need to learn.
But remember, what you see
1. Was build in years
2. Was build by teams or several people
3. Was build by using earlier projects templates

I want to focus on the 3rd part - using templates. No one professional builds things from scratch. When someone builds the logic he uses functional blocks and scripts from other projects. The same is with installation, HMI, even with drawings and documentation.

Tech Trends by Deloitte
Trends affect process automation and industrial digitalization in the following:
- Cloud SCADA (SaaS)
- Digital twins and ML in OTS, APM and MES solutions
- AR/VR in HMIs
- Cyber Security (use of advanced logging, monitoring and SOCs in PCN)

SCADA explained

SCADA is a software.
Mostly installed on Windows OS nowadays.

It allows Operator to monitor
(read from PLC) and supervisory control the process (write to PLC).

Automatic control is implemented in PLC and not in a SCADA.

Major components of SCADA are:
⁃
Points database (stores cofiguration of plc read/write addresses; ranges; descriptions; alarms setpoints and priorities; history, trend and group configurations; scripting. Databases are offline and online running on SQL or Oracle mostly).
⁃
HMI (Mostly uses HTML technology: DeltaV and Experion)
⁃
Built-in set of drivers to allow communication with PLCs, gateways, etc. such as Modbus. (usually you don't touch drivers and it runs behind the scenes. However, it is possible to write your own C/C++ for proprietary protocols)

You got the following binary code in your PLC register: 000000000111.
What will be the decimal number, or value you see after conversion?

Backup and Restore at process control networks

Backup is a process of creating a copy of your data to be able to restore it during failure or disaster.

Backups can be a file backup, configuration backup, database export or a whole system backup for PLC, SCADA, network devices and windows machines.

Smaller is backup faster is recovery.
Thus, if you work with files, it is rational to make a backup of just a file, rather than recovering the whole system in hours with a system backup.

Most PCN uses Acronis backup and restore for system backups.

It is must to have a written procedures for sites for backup and restore with details on criticality of systems, backups schedules, validation, storage locations etc.
