An RAAF flight carrying hygiene kits, shelter gear and solar lights is on its way to Nepal, the federal government says, according to SBS News.

More than 930 people have been confirmed dead after last week's Himalayan floods, with more than 4,400 still missing, including 43 Australians. Foreign Minister Penny Wong says Australia is working with Nepal and China, but recovery is running under difficult conditions.

Beijing has denied that comments about Taiwan at the Pacific Islands Forum were a threat. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says climate and security will be Australia's focus at the Palau summit.

Watch whether the C-17's stores reach the search and whether DFAT revises the missing-Australian count overnight.

Two Australians have been safely located after catastrophic flooding on the Nepal–China border, but 42 remain missing and the combined death toll has surpassed 1,000, SBS News reports.

Perth pilgrim Luke Costanzo, 30, is among those still unaccounted for after a trek toward Mount Kailash. His family said they are hoping for a miracle. Foreign Minister Penny Wong said officials were thankful a second Australian had been found in Tibet, but warned search teams face extremely difficult conditions.

Rescuers are racing to free hundreds of hydropower workers believed trapped in mud-filled tunnels in Rasuwa and Nuwakot. Watch the overnight missing tally and whether more RAAF supplies reach the search.

Four more Australians have been confirmed safe after catastrophic flooding on the Nepal–China border, and DFAT has cut the number still unaccounted for to 38, SBS News reports.

Six Australians have now been located since the glacial flood hit last Wednesday, including Cara Severino found safe in Nepal over the weekend and an Australian contacted in Tibet. A Royal Australian Air Force aid flight was due into Nepal on Wednesday morning.

The combined death toll has passed 1,000, with thousands still missing. Rescuers continue digging for hydropower workers trapped in mud-filled tunnels as hopes fade.

Anthony Albanese has recorded his lowest approval rating as prime minister in the Guardian Essential poll, as the Coalition regains ground and support for One Nation slips, The Guardian reports.

The survey finds Labor and Pauline Hanson’s party both losing share amid what the pollster frames as a messy immigration debate, while the Coalition picks up votes.

The result lands as Canberra heads into a spring sitting period where migration settings, cost-of-living pressure and minority-party influence remain front-of-mind for voters.

Australia’s economy expanded 0.4 per cent in the June quarter and 2.1 per cent through the year, a soft but still-growing result Treasurer Jim Chalmers called robust in “challenging international circumstances”, The Guardian reports.

Households cut northern-hemisphere travel as Middle East conflict lifted airfares, while record EV and hybrid sales drove about three-quarters of the quarter’s consumption growth.

Per-person GDP slipped 0.1 per cent and labour productivity was flat, keeping living-standards and rate-path debates front of mind for Canberra and the RBA.

Australia is deploying 15 specialist drone operators to help Nepal’s search-and-rescue effort as the flood death toll reaches about 1,200 and around 4,200 people remain missing, ABC News reports.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said 38 Australians are still unaccounted for and that concerns deepen “every day, every hour”. The new team from NSW Fire and Rescue and Queensland Fire Department brings Australian personnel in Nepal to 34.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking from Palau, also announced a further $3 million in humanitarian aid, taking Australia’s package to about $11 million after an RAAF C-17 delivered kits and shelter gear.

A Central Coast tradie in a front yard with children and a university student asleep in his bed are among the innocents killed in Sydney’s sprawling gang war, ABC News reports.

Police say eight people have been killed in mistaken-identity cases since 2021; counting family members and bystanders, the toll rises to 14. Detectives blame overseas-directed contracts and young hitmen willing to murder for a few thousand dollars.

The latest deaths — Joshua Macdonald, 40, and biomedical student Marco Tapia, 23 — have sharpened pressure on NSW to contain organised-crime violence spilling onto ordinary streets.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting what could be the strongest El Niño on record, with new research pointing to an alarming climate-change influence on the Pacific pattern, The Guardian reports.

Forecasters warn hotter, drier conditions could intensify bushfire and drought risk across southern and eastern Australia through the warmer months.

Farmers, insurers and emergency services will be watching the next BoM updates as the event’s timing and peak strength come into sharper focus.
