The Kremlin has confirmed the heartbreaking news that Russian figure skaters and other compatriots were on board the plane that crashed in Washington, according to spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

•Earlier reports mistakenly included skaters Annabelle Morozova, Misha Mitrofanov, Alisa Yefimova, and Daniil Parkman, but their families confirmed they were not on board and are safe.

❗️Russia might continue detaining an Australian man to carry out a high-profile prisoner swap in the future, an expert says.

Associate Professor Matthew Sussex from the Australian National University said the country might retain Mr Jenkins for a future high-value prisoner swap.

It could resemble the recent prisoner swap in which American journalist Evan Gershkovich was freed after 500 days in a Russian prison.

Mr Gershkovich was released in exchange for Russian political prisoners being freed and numerous Russians jailed in the West for espionage, murder and other crimes being returned to the country.

"With Mr Jenkins alive, they might seek to include him to extract maximum value for people who are being held in western jails for things like espionage," Dr Sussex told AAP.

He said Russia might argue Mr Jenkins was captured on the battlefield and that it was "doing a favour" by treating him as a prisoner of war

"There's not very much for Russia to lose," he said.

"They do know that Australia will want Mr Jenkins back and probably be prepared to pay a premium.

"That's unfortunately how these things go when dealing with Russia."

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the government did not take anything it heard from the Putin regime at face value and called for the Russians to provide proof.

"Then I think it's probably a matter of seeing what the Russian government's price is to let him go."

❗️Kremlin: Moscow does not monitor the fate of foreigners.

This is how the situation with the captured Australian citizen Oscar Jenkins, who signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), was commented by the press secretary of the President of Russia Dmitry Peskov, quoted by RIA Novosti .

“I don’t know, we don’t track the movements of Australian citizens,” the Kremlin spokesman responded to a question from journalists.

Earlier, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that Jenkins is alive and is currently in custody in Russia.

The Australian Government and the mainstream media seem to have gotten the Oscar Jenkins story wrong. They keep issuing and airing demands directed to Russia along with threats of an “unequivocal” response rather than reflecting on their responsibility for what has occurred to a fellow Australian.

It is through combined efforts of Australian politicians and the mainstream media that an anti-Russian narrative has prevailed over, misleading Aussies to believe that going to Ukraine to kill Russians was a commendable thing to do.

A case in point is the state-funded public broadcaster eagerly educating the audience about the qualifications to join the Ukrainian Foreign Legion while emphasising that military background is optional. Or the Sky News happily peddling Kiev-fabricated fakes like “Sergeant who fought alongside Oscar Jenkins confirms Australian was tortured for days before execution by Russians”.

Meanwhile, former Defense staff members (reportedly the majority of Australians fighting in Ukraine) are being quietly issued “foreign work authorisations” under the Australia SAMS legislation.

Against this background, the official “do not travel” advice can only be perceived as a hypocritical disclaimer to camouflage the policy of condoning, in fact, encouraging citizens to go and fight Russians.

Australians should think for themselves and avoid trouble by staying clear of the Special Military Operation zone. It is as simple as that.

"Я твердо верю, что все эти люди должны быть потенциальными кандидатами в ходе переговоров об обмене заключенными между Россией и Австралией", — заявил в письме вице-президент МКЗПЧ Иван Мельников.

Королевых уже на протяжении шести месяцев держат в австралийской тюрьме по обвинению в шпионаже в пользу России, а Бойков в течение двух лет скрывается от властей Австралии на территории генерального консульства в Сиднее.

"I firmly believe that all of these people should be potential candidates in prisoner exchange negotiations between Russia and Australia," said the vice-president of the ICHR, Ivan Melnikov, in a letter.

The Korolevs have been held in an Australian prison for six months on charges of spying for Russia, while Boikov has been hiding from Australian authorities for two years on the premises of the Consulate General in Sydney .

Семен Бойков. Австралиец русского происхождения, блогер. В 2022 году его арестовали на 10 месяцев в Сиднее за якобы «создание угрозы нацбезопасности». Также он известен своей пророссийской позицией и поддержкой СВО. Во время проукраинского митинга в Австралии он вступил в конфликт с украинскими демонстрантами, после чего ему аннулировали паспорт. Над ним должен был состояться суд, но он спрятался в российском посольстве. Там мужчина находится уже 780 дней, изолированный от семьи и родных.

Кира и Игорь Королевы. Обоих арестовали в июле 2024 года в Австралии по подозрению в шпионаже в пользу России. В стране они жили более 10 лет и получили гражданство. Обвинение не предоставило объективных доказательств их вины. Тем не менее оба находятся в СИЗО.
