❗️Expelling Russia’s ambassador to Australia is “on the table”, foreign minister Penny Wong has warned, as the federal government scrambles to verify reports that Melbourne man Oscar Jenkins had been killed after being captured by Russian forces while fighting for Ukraine.
🇦🇺Wong said the government held “grave concerns” for the welfare of the 32-year-old Australian citizen, after reports overnight that he had died.
🇷🇺Senior members of the Coalition opposition have called for Russia’s ambassador to be expelled and Australia’s ambassador to Moscow to be recalled; Wong said the government was considering all options.
“These reports have not been verified, but we continue to have grave concerns for Mr Jenkins’ welfare,” the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement on Tuesday.
“But I want to be clear, all options are on the table. Those options include expelling the ambassador and recalling Australia’s ambassador in Russia … I need, as the foreign minister, to identify and ascertain the facts beforehand.”

❗️Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has kept the door open to expelling the Russian ambassador to Australia if reports that Melbourne teacher Oscar Jenkins has been killed by Russian forces in Ukraine are verified.
But Senator Wong pointed out relations between Australia and Russia have been in a poor state for more than a decade.
“Obviously, this does not occur in the context of relationship that has been an easy relationship,” she said.
“Australia has maintained diplomatic relations with Russia through that period under different governments.
“However, we will consider all options once we have ascertained the facts and once we can verify what has actually occurred here with Mr Jenkins.”

❗️Diplomatic relations between Australia and Russia are heading towards their lowest ebb in a decade, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong opening the door to expelling Vladimir Putin’s local envoy over the possible execution of prisoner of war Oscar Jenkins.
“If there has been any harm caused that is absolutely reprehensible and if that is confirmed we will take the strongest possible action,” Mr Albanese said.
“I will make it also clear that we are making urgent enquiries following the reports of his death. These reports have not yet been verified" Penny Wong added.
But relations between Canberra and Moscow reached a nadir in 2014, when Russian-backed rebels in Ukraine shot down Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, which 38 Australian citizens and permanent residents onboard.
Then prime minister Tony Abbott promised to “shirtfront” Mr Putin over the murder of 298 passengers and crew, and then foreign minister Julie Bishop personally confronted the Russian president on the sidelines of a summit.

❗️Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has warned social media owners that any interference in his country's upcoming 2025 parliamentary elections is unacceptable.
Elections in Australia are exclusively a matter for Australians, the Prime Minister stressed in an interview with The Age newspaper.
"I don't want to judge what people do abroad, everyone is entitled to their own opinions and views on this matter, but we have a law on foreign interference in our country, and elections in Australia are a matter for Australians themselves," Albanese said, answering a question about the actions of businessman and billionaire Elon Musk, who publicly supported the Alternative for Germany (AfD) political party in Germany.

❗️Former Australian soldier and military lawyer Dr Glenn Kolomeitz (pictured above) claims video evidence of Oscar Jenkin's body was captured by a drone.
Insiders claimed to news.com.au that the Australian schoolteacher Oscar Jenkins is believed to have been dead for weeks, since before the video first even emerged of his capture.
What is believed to be his body was discovered near a prisoner of war camp.
Dr Glenn Kolomeitz is in touch with another Australian in Ukraine’s fighting forces who claimed Ukrainians have taken drone footage of a body matching Mr Jenkins at an area where the Russians were known to be holding prisoners temporarily, further solidifying fears that the reports of his death are true.
“It would have been an execution,” Dr Kolomeitz told news.com.au.
Dr Kolomeitz said it was “very unusual” that a foreign legionnaire taken prisoner would be killed by Russians, given the political value these hostages hold.
He said the Russians might have killed Mr Jenkins because their tactical situation “changed”, meaning they had to make a hasty retreat.
“On the way they’ve killed prisoners who posed a logistical liability to them,” he said.
Russia’s military is known to have very “loose” leadership structure and so Mr Jenkins might have been murdered by “orcs” — a term used to describe Russian soldiers who don’t follow the rule of law.
“It’s possible some junior Russians without any leadership have just killed him. That’s highly feasible,” Dr Kolomeitz added.

❗️JOURNALIST: Cassidy from Seven News. Penny Wong this morning said all options are on the table with the Russian Ambassador after reports of the death of Oscar Jenkins. Do you think that the Russian Ambassador should be expelled, and what steps are being taken to confirm those reports?
MINISTER HUSIC: A lot of this I might leave to the Foreign Minister. And you’ve heard that the Foreign Minister, at her direction DFAT called in the Russian Ambassador to get details about what has occurred to Mr Jenkins and also to remind the Russian Federation of their obligations under International Humanitarian Law with respect to prisoners of war.
I do note the Coalition giving us advice on the way we treat Ambassadors that they didn’t take themselves with the downing of MH17, where they never, I don’t believe, expelled the Russian Federation Ambassador.
So, what might be best here is to calmly and with determination get to the bottom of what has gone on. We will, based on what you’ve just referred to in terms of the Foreign Minister’s response, make our decisions when they are appropriate to be made.
But, again, I think Australians will, in particular, look in horror for a prisoner of war has been mistreated. And if it’s breached International Humanitarian Law then you would expect a response to that.
