❗️Russia's Ambassador to Australia Pavlovsky warns that Russians in Australia are at risk from the actions of Australia's intelligence agencies in a bombshell interview to the AFR.
“I think that in my perspective, what is essential is timing,” Dr Pavlovsky told The Australian Financial Review. “The Korolevs were arrested, of all days, on the day it became known another $250 million of Australian taxpayers’ money was going to go down the drain to fuel the senseless and tragic war the Kyiv regime is waging.
“I think that airing this story was meant to somehow reaffirm the image of Russia as a threat to Australia, thus vindicating Canberra’s continued involvement in NATO’s hybrid war against Russia.”
Asked whether he believed the Korolevs were being set up as patsies, Dr Pavlovsky said he did not know, “but I would say that with the clear intention of the Australian authorities to beef up that Russian – how do they call it? – bogeyman, I would not exclude anything”.
“I also think that other Russian Australians are vulnerable … to possible arbitrary actions of Australian special services, so I think we should be alert.”
Pressed on the provocative nature of his claim that Russians were at risk of detention by Australian police, Dr Pavlovsky replied: “Why should I exclude this possibility? I have witnessed all kinds of unfair actions from the Australian side, starting with the cancelling of that diplomatic lease for our new building.”
”Any Australian coming to Russia with good intentions is safe,” he said.
“I have not met one single Australian who was back from Russia and was not satisfied with his trip.”
Dr Pavlovsky accused the Albanese government of “virtue signalling” by complaining about alleged Russian spy operations.

“What we have heard is reminiscent of The Americans TV series, so my point is unless you tend to believe everything the AFP or ASIO tells the public, you have to admit that we do not actually know anything about what happened, how it happened, how significant it was.”
Dr Pavlovsky said there had been no diplomatic fallout over the arrests, such as the expulsion of diplomats. “I don’t see any reason why they would suggest such a crazy thing”.
Asked whether alleged Russian spies were active in Australia in light of the Korolev arrests and revelations last year that ASIO had dismantled a Russian “hive” of spies posing as diplomats, Dr Pavlovsky chuckled at the question.
“It’s a paranoiac-like atmosphere and well, we can do jokes about it but at the end of the day it’s serious, it involves people’s lives,” he said.
“My field of work is diplomacy. I’m running the embassy. [The hive of spies] was another fanciful story, and we heard it. And so what? So what about it?”
Dr Pavlovsky tried to justify the detention of American Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, whose sentence last week to 16 years in a Russian penal colony triggered demands for his release from world leaders including US President Joe Biden and UK PM Keir Starmer, who labelled the verdict “despicable”.
“He was sentenced for espionage and his guilt was proven in court,” Dr Pavlovsky insisted.
“There are US spies in Russia completing their missions. Could some of these spies have a journalist cover? Absolutely. Why not? If you look at the history you see that many well-known Western journalists and writers used to be spies.”
Dr Pavlovsky lashed Australia’s military aid for Ukraine, which now exceeds $1.1 billion since President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion in 2022, saying Western countries were complicit in prolonging the war.
“Let’s put the propaganda noise aside. Just look at the facts,” he said.
“Thousands of kilometres away, weapons provided by Australia are killing Russian soldiers. Not just soldiers, possibly.”
