How first atheists reinterpreted myth

Early atheists-philosophers had issues with mythology. To them it was a superstition to be reformed or abandoned outright. The latter, more radical option was less popular since the majority of the Greeks were still religious. Thus atheists started small by targeting more fantastical myths. For example the birth of Dionysus. Son of Zeus and mortal Semele Dionysus was still in his mother’s womb when Zeus’ wife Hera in her jealousy tricked Semele into making Zeus kill her. Dionysus (still a fetus) was saved by his father who sewed him into his thigh and in a way, gave birth to Dionysus himself. It’s definitely a peculiar story, one ancient atheists tried to reinterpret.

Those old traditions from our ancestors,
the ones we’ve had as long as time itself,
no argument will ever overthrow,
in spite of subtleties sharp minds invent.

Lönnrunes - Face Runes

We know the Germanic Runes have several variations. Most of us are familiar with the Edler & Younger Futhark, we talked a while ago about Staveless Runes here. But there's another that was extremely interesting, Lönnrunes meaning Secret Runes, or what we will call Face-Runes, or you could even call them Nordic emojis.

These were from a Runic Relic (N B384) in the above picture, found in Bergen, Norway. Though the relic shows little faces, the have a secret meaning. Each of the hairs of the beards holds a cypher which we will post after this. To the untrained eye, this just looks like little doodles, but they're like the Horns of Gallehus, a way to send secret messages.

The relic itself is broken and is very unique encoding Younger Futhark. So what is N B384's message?
"SIM LIBI SINU of "as his/her life"
Unfortunately we dont have any other context for this message, but its an amazing find nonetheless!

In the next post we will show how the cypher works, and how to use it yourself!

One who knows how to read fairy tales will find in them many ancient cultural relics. Hidden within are remnants of myths, primeval legal and military views, people's views on nature and their relationship to it, the remains of ancient public and private institutions, and so on. For an attentive cultural historian, fairy tales are therefore of great value, and he will easily be able to distinguish in them all the later additions, which, in the end, will also be of interest to him.

The power of the gods
is difficult to stir—
but it’s a power we can count on.
It punishes all mortal men
who honour their own ruthless wills,
who, in their fits of madness,
fail to reverence the gods.
Gods track down every man
who scorns their worship,
using their cunning to conceal
the enduring steady pace of time.
For there’s no righteousness
in those who recognize or practice
what’s beyond our customary laws.
The truth is easy to acknowledge:
whatever is divine is mighty,
whatever has been long-established law
is an eternal natural truth.

After more than 10 years of writing almost exclusively on the topic of Paganism I have finally decided to branch out and create a new channel dedicated to one of my hobbies. If you are interested, feel free to drop by.

Paganism 101 for Germanic Pagans honoring the Landvaettir.
What Germanic pagans did on a daily basis and yet what most neglect is honoring the Landvaettir and it can be very simple. Being mindful of the natural land around your home and fostering an environment that is friendly to all living things within this area. The modern American lawn is the bane of the Landvaettir it is the cultivation of death. Clean up garbage and anything that is harmful to the land. Create a Vé sacred place for offerings by placing a flat stone in an area that speaks to you. You can mark it if you wish. Even just sitting outside and listening is a way to commune with them. A lot of this sounds like environmentalism mixed with spirituality? That’s because it is! Our ancestors were Animists and saw the value of the spirit in all things natural and strived to live in cohesion with it unlike modern times. If you’re taking from the land give back to it. Avoid loud noises or leaving tools near your sacred space. I’m certain the majority of American land is cursed because of our absolute disrespect to these forces that’s an easy parallel any Native American could agree on. In the Landnámabók, land spirits violently claimed the life of a settler who failed to honor traditional heathen customs and rituals.

Plato was as much of an atheist as Dawkins. To say otherwise is like treating first stage cancer as something fundamentally different from the fifth one.
