Tier-1 vs tier-3 GEOs on a fixed budget: volume vs margin, decided
The setup: $1,500 test budget, a dating offer that pays in both tier-1 (US/UK) and tier-3 (PH/ID). Where to deploy first?
The move: Split $750 each. Tracked not just ROI but how far the budget stretched and how clean the data came back.
The numbers (illustrative): Tier-1: $4 CPMs, burned the $750 in 2 days, +12% ROI but tiny sample — only ~9 conversions to learn from. Tier-3: $0.30 CPMs, lasted 9 days, +21% ROI and ~180 conversions, giving statistically real signal to optimize on.
The lesson: On a small budget, tier-3 isn't just cheaper margin — it buys you DATA. The conversion volume lets you actually optimize creatives and angles. Tier-1 on a thin budget gives you a handful of conversions and pure noise.
What I'd do differently: I used to test in tier-1 first because the payouts excited me, then wonder why I couldn't optimize on 9 data points. Test the angle in cheap GEOs to learn what works, THEN port the winner to tier-1 where the money is. Buy your education where it's cheap.

Google выпустил Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash

Automated rules vs manual optimization: when the robot killed my winner
The setup: 6 campaigns running, $600/day total. To save hours, I set auto-rules: pause any ad set below break-even ROI over 24 hours.
The move: Compared a month on aggressive auto-rules vs the prior month of manual eyes-on optimization.
The numbers (illustrative): Auto-rules saved ~2 hrs/day but paused an ad set on a Sunday dip that would've recovered Monday — it had been my +40% performer. Net: auto-month landed +11% ROI. Manual month, same campaigns, +19% — because I'd have held that ad set through the weekend lull.
The lesson: Auto-rules don't understand context — day-of-week seasonality, a tracking blip, a payout that posts late. They optimize on a snapshot, not a trend. They're great for catching disasters, terrible for nuanced calls.
What I'd do differently: Use auto-rules as a circuit breaker (kill anything spending with zero conversions after $X), never as a profit optimizer. I gave the robot a scalpel when it should've had a fire alarm. Automate the obvious cuts, keep human judgment on the close calls.

Video vs static creatives: the production-cost-per-ROI nobody calculates
The setup: Mobile app install offer. Video creatives convert better — everyone says so. But video takes 5x longer to produce. Is it worth it on a tight team?
The move: Tracked not just ROI but ROI-per-hour-of-production. Made 4 statics (~1 hr total) and 4 videos (~5 hrs total), ran both on $1,200.
The numbers (illustrative): Video: +31% ROI, clearly better front-end. Static: +19% ROI, worse per-impression. BUT: in the time it took to make 4 videos, we could've made ~20 statics and tested 5x more angles. The statics found 2 unexpected winners we'd never have guessed; video's hand-picked angles included a dud.
The lesson: Video wins per-creative but loses per-hour when you're testing. In the discovery phase, static's cheap iteration finds winning ANGLES faster. Once you know the angle, upgrade it to video to squeeze the last points.
What I'd do differently: I spent the first two weeks polishing videos of UNTESTED angles. Test the message cheap with statics, produce video only for proven winners. Production cost is part of ROI — a +31% creative that took 5 hours can lose to a +19% one you can make 20 of.

Lookalike audiences vs uploaded buyer lists: which seed actually scales
The setup: An e-com offer with ~1,200 past buyers on file. Build a lookalike off the buyer list, or off the pixel's broader 'add-to-cart' event? $1,500 test.
The move: Two 1% lookalikes — one seeded from 1,200 actual purchasers, one from ~15,000 add-to-cart events. Same creative.
The numbers (illustrative): Add-to-cart lookalike (big seed): scaled smoothly, +14% ROI, lots of volume. Buyer-list lookalike (small but pure seed): +33% ROI but capped — the audience was small and saturated within a week, then ROI collapsed as frequency climbed.
The lesson: Seed quality vs seed size is a real tradeoff. A pure buyer seed gives a sharper, higher-converting audience that exhausts fast. A bigger, noisier intent seed scales further at lower margin. Neither is 'right' — it depends whether you need margin or volume this week.
What I'd do differently: I ran the pure buyer lookalike hard and hit the saturation wall blind, watching ROI rot from +33% to -5% over five days. Use the pure seed for a high-margin burst, switch to the broad seed before frequency kills it. Watch frequency on small audiences like a hawk — it's the saturation alarm.

Server-to-server postback vs network pixel: the attribution gap that ate 18% of conversions
The setup: Lead-gen on mobile, lots of in-app browser traffic. Choice for attribution: drop the network's client-side pixel, or wire up server-to-server postbacks.
The move: We ran the pixel for a month, then switched to S2S postbacks and compared recorded conversions against the advertiser's own dashboard.
The numbers (illustrative): Client pixel: under-counted by ~18% — in-app browsers, ad blockers, and cookie loss silently dropped conversions. We were optimizing on a lie and pausing 'losing' campaigns that were actually profitable. S2S postback: matched the advertiser's numbers within 2%, and three 'dead' campaigns turned out to be +20% once tracked correctly.
The lesson: Client-side pixels leak — badly on mobile and in-app traffic. If your attribution under-counts, you don't just lose data, you make WRONG decisions: killing winners that looked like losers. S2S postbacks cost an hour of setup and tell the truth.
What I'd do differently: I ran client pixel for a full month and paused profitable campaigns based on phantom losses — the real cost wasn't the missing data, it was the good campaigns I murdered. Wire S2S before you spend serious money on mobile. The setup friction is nothing next to optimizing on bad numbers.
