Broad vs detailed targeting on Facebook in 2025: where each still wins
The setup: E-com dropship offer, $250/day. The eternal debate: trust the algo with broad, or hand-pick interests?
The move: Two ad sets, identical creative and budget. One fully broad (age/GEO only), one with a 3-interest stack we'd researched.
The numbers (illustrative): Week 1: detailed won, +18% vs broad's -4% — the interest stack gave the algo a head start while the pixel was cold. Week 2-3: broad caught up and passed it, +26% vs detailed's +14%, as the pixel matured and broad found pockets we'd never have targeted manually.
The lesson: Detailed targeting is training wheels for a cold pixel. Broad is the endgame once you have conversion data. The mistake is picking a side religiously — they win at different points in the campaign's life.
What I'd do differently: I used to be a broad-only purist and lit money on fire during cold starts. Now I open with detailed to feed the pixel, then test broad around day 7 once there's signal. Switch tactics as the data matures instead of marrying one.

Network's pre-made lander vs your own: the 11-point CVR gap
The setup: CPA network handed us their 'proven' lander for a sweeps offer. We ran it, then built our own to compare. $1,200 split.
The move: Same traffic source, same offer, A/B between the network lander (used by 200 other affiliates) and our custom one with local-language tweaks and a faster load.
The numbers (illustrative): Network lander: 4.2% CVR, 3.1s load time, ROI +6%. Our lander: 9.8% CVR, 1.4s load, ROI +29%. The network lander was saturated — users had seen that exact page across a dozen other campaigns.
The lesson: A 'proven' network lander is proven for the network, not for you. By the time it reaches you it's burned — the same skeptical users have seen it everywhere. Speed and a localized angle beat a generic 'high-converting' template most of the time.
What I'd do differently: I trusted the network's lander for a full week before bothering to build my own, because 'why fix what converts?' It converted at HALF what it could. Treat handed-down landers as a baseline to beat on day 2, not a finish line.

Paid search vs affiliate SEO for the same keywords: rent vs own
The setup: A 'best VPN' style affiliate play. Same money keywords. Choice: buy Google Ads traffic now, or build an SEO site and wait.
The move: We did both in parallel as a 6-month experiment. PPC got $4,000. SEO got ~$4,000 in content and links.
The numbers (illustrative): PPC: instant traffic, +14% ROI steady, but the second we stopped paying, revenue went to zero. SEO: months 1-3 near-zero return (-100% on paper), then month 5 the site ranked and started returning ~$1,100/mo on a sunk cost, ROI climbing every month after.
The lesson: PPC is renting traffic — predictable, instant, gone when you stop. SEO is buying an asset — brutal payback period, then near-free traffic that compounds. They're not competitors, they're different cashflow shapes.
What I'd do differently: I judged the SEO arm as a failure at month 3 and almost killed it right before it ranked. SEO's J-curve looks identical to a dead project until it isn't. Fund PPC for cashflow, fund SEO for equity, and don't measure the slow one with the fast one's stopwatch.

Hand-built creatives vs dynamic creative optimization: who wins on a small budget
The setup: $100/day Facebook test, lead-gen offer. The pitch for DCO: upload 5 images, 5 texts, let the algo mix-and-match.
The move: One ad set with a single hand-crafted creative we believed in, one DCO ad set with the asset mix. Equal budget, 10 days.
The numbers (illustrative): DCO: needed ~$80 in spend just to test combinations before it found anything, ended at +8% ROI. Hand-built single creative: +24% ROI, because the budget all flowed to one concept and learned fast.
The lesson: DCO needs budget to explore the combination space. On $100/day it spreads the money so thin that nothing exits the learning phase before your test window closes. DCO shines at scale; on a small budget, conviction beats combinatorics.
What I'd do differently: I used DCO as a crutch to avoid deciding which creative was best — and the algo punished my indecision by spending my test budget on bad combos. Below ~$200/day, pick your best shot and commit. Save DCO for when you can afford the exploration tax.

Я — Head of Retention.

Pop traffic vs push for a low-payout offer: the cheap-clicks illusion
The setup: A $1.20 payout PIN-submit offer, tier-3 GEOs. The two cheapest sources on the menu: pops at ~$0.0008/visit and push at ~$0.004/click.
The move: $400 split. Pops looked 5x cheaper per visit, so the instinct was to load up there.
The numbers (illustrative): Pops: 250k visits, but bot/junk traffic and accidental clicks meant ~0.0009% real CVR — net ROI -22% after the trash. Push: 50k clicks, intentional taps, 0.04% CVR, ROI +15%. Push cost 5x more per click and earned positive.
The lesson: Cost-per-visit is a trap on low-payout offers. Pop traffic is cheap because much of it is involuntary or fraudulent — you pay for noise. Push clicks are deliberate, so even at 5x the price the intent-per-dollar is higher.
What I'd do differently: I chased the headline CPM on pops and spent two days scrubbing fraud out of my data instead of profiting. On thin-payout offers, price the click by intent and fraud rate, not by the rate card. Cheap traffic that doesn't convert is the most expensive kind.

Tier-1 vs tier-3 GEOs on a fixed budget: volume vs margin, decided
The setup: $1,500 test budget, a dating offer that pays in both tier-1 (US/UK) and tier-3 (PH/ID). Where to deploy first?
The move: Split $750 each. Tracked not just ROI but how far the budget stretched and how clean the data came back.
The numbers (illustrative): Tier-1: $4 CPMs, burned the $750 in 2 days, +12% ROI but tiny sample — only ~9 conversions to learn from. Tier-3: $0.30 CPMs, lasted 9 days, +21% ROI and ~180 conversions, giving statistically real signal to optimize on.
The lesson: On a small budget, tier-3 isn't just cheaper margin — it buys you DATA. The conversion volume lets you actually optimize creatives and angles. Tier-1 on a thin budget gives you a handful of conversions and pure noise.
What I'd do differently: I used to test in tier-1 first because the payouts excited me, then wonder why I couldn't optimize on 9 data points. Test the angle in cheap GEOs to learn what works, THEN port the winner to tier-1 where the money is. Buy your education where it's cheap.

Google выпустил Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash

Automated rules vs manual optimization: when the robot killed my winner
The setup: 6 campaigns running, $600/day total. To save hours, I set auto-rules: pause any ad set below break-even ROI over 24 hours.
The move: Compared a month on aggressive auto-rules vs the prior month of manual eyes-on optimization.
The numbers (illustrative): Auto-rules saved ~2 hrs/day but paused an ad set on a Sunday dip that would've recovered Monday — it had been my +40% performer. Net: auto-month landed +11% ROI. Manual month, same campaigns, +19% — because I'd have held that ad set through the weekend lull.
The lesson: Auto-rules don't understand context — day-of-week seasonality, a tracking blip, a payout that posts late. They optimize on a snapshot, not a trend. They're great for catching disasters, terrible for nuanced calls.
What I'd do differently: Use auto-rules as a circuit breaker (kill anything spending with zero conversions after $X), never as a profit optimizer. I gave the robot a scalpel when it should've had a fire alarm. Automate the obvious cuts, keep human judgment on the close calls.

Video vs static creatives: the production-cost-per-ROI nobody calculates
The setup: Mobile app install offer. Video creatives convert better — everyone says so. But video takes 5x longer to produce. Is it worth it on a tight team?
The move: Tracked not just ROI but ROI-per-hour-of-production. Made 4 statics (~1 hr total) and 4 videos (~5 hrs total), ran both on $1,200.
The numbers (illustrative): Video: +31% ROI, clearly better front-end. Static: +19% ROI, worse per-impression. BUT: in the time it took to make 4 videos, we could've made ~20 statics and tested 5x more angles. The statics found 2 unexpected winners we'd never have guessed; video's hand-picked angles included a dud.
The lesson: Video wins per-creative but loses per-hour when you're testing. In the discovery phase, static's cheap iteration finds winning ANGLES faster. Once you know the angle, upgrade it to video to squeeze the last points.
What I'd do differently: I spent the first two weeks polishing videos of UNTESTED angles. Test the message cheap with statics, produce video only for proven winners. Production cost is part of ROI — a +31% creative that took 5 hours can lose to a +19% one you can make 20 of.

Lookalike audiences vs uploaded buyer lists: which seed actually scales
The setup: An e-com offer with ~1,200 past buyers on file. Build a lookalike off the buyer list, or off the pixel's broader 'add-to-cart' event? $1,500 test.
The move: Two 1% lookalikes — one seeded from 1,200 actual purchasers, one from ~15,000 add-to-cart events. Same creative.
The numbers (illustrative): Add-to-cart lookalike (big seed): scaled smoothly, +14% ROI, lots of volume. Buyer-list lookalike (small but pure seed): +33% ROI but capped — the audience was small and saturated within a week, then ROI collapsed as frequency climbed.
The lesson: Seed quality vs seed size is a real tradeoff. A pure buyer seed gives a sharper, higher-converting audience that exhausts fast. A bigger, noisier intent seed scales further at lower margin. Neither is 'right' — it depends whether you need margin or volume this week.
What I'd do differently: I ran the pure buyer lookalike hard and hit the saturation wall blind, watching ROI rot from +33% to -5% over five days. Use the pure seed for a high-margin burst, switch to the broad seed before frequency kills it. Watch frequency on small audiences like a hawk — it's the saturation alarm.
