1️⃣ PhD 1: (with Dr. Guelfo) The student will study leaching and mobility of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). This position will be funded by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) and conducted in collaboration university and consultant partners. Project objectives include design and implementation of sorption studies, sorption modeling, development of standard leaching methods for PFAS, and analysis using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry. Additional opportunities to develop new analytical strategies for PFASs may also be available.
2️⃣ PhD 2: (with Dr. Shen) The student will work on design and synthesis of macrocyclic sorbents for selective removal of 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated solvents. The sorbents will be used for enhancing biodegradation of these two co-existing contaminants. This project is funded by National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The student will have opportunity to work on a couple of areas. 1) Design and synthesis of macrocyclic sorbents. 2) Sorption studies, with focus on separating 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated solvents. 3) Analysis of 1,4-dioxane and chlorinated solvents. 4) Biocompatibility of the synthesized sorbents. The student will work collaboratively with a diverse team and have opportunity to learn more about molecular simulation and environmental microbiology.
3️⃣ PhD 3: (with Drs. Guelfo and Reible) The student will work on evaluating the occurrence, fate, and transport of a broad suite of unregulated contaminants in wastewater residuals. The student will have an opportunity to work in one or more of the following areas. 1) Development and implementation of high throughput screening approaches for identification and prioritization of unregulated contaminants in residuals. 2) Field, laboratory, and modeling evaluations of contaminant behavior following land application of wastewater residuals. 3) Evaluation of the impacts of microplastics on the occurrence and transport of unregulated contaminants in wastewater residuals. Students with background in environmental engineering, analytical chemistry, hydrogeology, and chemical engineering are encouraged to apply.
