β€œIn living close to nature, one discovers that happiness does not consist in maximizing pleasure. It consists in tranquility. Once you have enjoyed tranquility long enough, you acquire actually an aversion to the thought of any very strong pleasureβ€”excessive pleasure would disrupt your tranquility.”

- Theodore J. Kaczynski

β€œThe yearning for freedom, attachment to nature, courage, honor, honesty, morality, friendship, love and all of the other social instincts...even free will itself: all of these human qualities, valued in the highest degree from the dawn of the human race, evolved through the millennia because they were appropriate and useful in the primitive circumstances in which people lived. But today, so-called β€œprogress” is changing the circumstances of human life to such an extent that these formerly advantageous qualities are becoming obsolete and useless. [...] This phenomenon can already be observed: Among the American middle class, the concept of honor has practically vanished, courage is little valued, friendship almost always lacks depth, honesty is decaying, and freedom seems to be identified, in the opinion of some people, with obedience to the rules. And bear in mind that this is only the beginning of the beginning.”

-Ted Kaczynski

"Three decades before AI, Ted Kaczynski rightly predicted how people - out of pragmaticism - would surrender their freedom to it.

Comfort is the killer of freedom. As technological progress continues, you'll inevitably have to make that choice between comfort and freedom; between industrial tech and wild nature.

For those who don't want to live in 1984, Fahrenheit 451 or Brave New World, the choice is easy: for the good of humanity and the whole biosphere, Nature must triumph over the technological civilization as soon as possible."

Humans have the need to set, work towards and achieve certain goals. This is part of what Kaczynski calls the "power process", a process rooted deep in human biology. The primitive man, had clear biological needs and to provide for these needs was his goal. He had clear goals, a difficult but fulfilling path to attaining them, and the satisfaction of achieving them was especially fulfilling, as failing to satisfy his needs would result in death.
So modern man, deeply unsatisfied and demoralized with his way of life, finds other activities to satisfy his need for completing the power process. These are the activities that Kaczynski calls "surrogate activities". Surrogate activities include artificial goals that are set up simply to have something to work towards, in order to simulate the power process and search for some form of fulfillment.

THE β€œBAD” PARTS OF TECHNOLOGY CANNOT BE SEPARATED FROM THE β€œGOOD” PARTS.

A further reason why industrial society cannot be reformed in favor of freedom is that modern technology is a unified system in which all parts are dependent on one another. You can't get rid of the "bad" parts of technology and retain only the "good" parts. Take modern medicine, for example. Progress in medical science depends on progress in chemistry, physics, biology, computer science and other fields. Advanced medical treatments require expensive, high-tech equipment that can be made available only by a technologically progressive, economically rich society. Clearly you can't have much progress in medicine without the whole technological system and everything that goes
with it.

Detractors of anti-tech thought point out the supposed hypocrisy of using tech to spread anti-tech ideas...

... but revolutionaries have always needed to utilize the infrastructure of the system they sought to destroy.

Both leftists and rightists have historically partaken in the governmental and social structures they wanted to abolish since they offered them a chance to spread their ideology.

And since anti-techers' sole long-term goal is the destruction of technological society (not reforming it or slowing its advancement), they MUST use all available means to achieve this end - including technological means. 🌲

(Furthermore, it can be said that it is exceedingly difficult to participate in modern society without using certain technologies, and that leaving society is perhaps harder than ever. But that's besides the main point: use tech to destroy tech.)

IN DEFENSE OF VIOLENCE
β€” Theodore John Kaczynski

Is violence sometimes necessary?

Of course, primitive warfare was very different from modern warfare. Today soldiers fight in order to satisfy the ambitions of politicians or dictators; in major wars they usually are conscripted, and even if they volunteer they generally do so only because they have been brainwashed by propaganda. The modern battlefield is a slaughterhouse in which the skill and courage of an individual soldier have little effect on his chances of survival. In contrast, the American Indians fought either to protect themselves and their families or because they wanted to fight. Their battles were on a small scale, so that the individual warrior was not reduced to an insignificant bit of cannon fodder. And their conflicts resulted in none of the massive environmental damage that accompanies modern warfare. In fact, since their wars kept the population down, the environmental consequences were positive.

"Green" energy is but a thinly-veiled attempt to hide the fact that industrial tech is incompatible with wild nature. The purpose of a system is what it does, and what technology does is extract resources from nature, destroying it in the process.

As anti-tech revolutionaries, the least we can do is constantly remind people of this reality; sooner or later they'll have to come to terms with it.
