The system's neatest trick.

To understand what the trick is, we first have to understand what the system itself is, and is not. For starters, it has to be stated that while people in positions of power and people with authority (politicians, billionaires etc.) and people who help them exert their authority (cops, military) are servants of the system, they don't constitute it. The reason for this being that their personal beliefs may actually be in conflict with what's beneficial for the system. A quick example would be police brutality. A cop who beats a suspect is not a cop who does the system's work, as violence is not beneficial to the system. He is merely letting out his own rage. This also applies to, for example, politicians. Corrupt politicians existing doesn't mean that corruption is beneficial to the system, and as long as they don't publicly condone acts of stealing and corruption, they are still obedient servants of the system.

"Nightfall" was remarkably prescient in this way; the story follows a civilization surrounded by multiple suns who have never seen the night sky, much less the stars above. A once in a millennia eclipse occurs and madness takes hold of the planet.

Comfortably Divorced from reality, they were not prepared for suddenly having to confront it.

All people are the same, and the further from reality we stray the more the madness will take hold when we finally return. This can be seen most of all when the upper class is tasked with something as simple as creating a fire, even with the help of a lighter and Firestarters.

Here is the crux: humanity WILL return to reality when the resources of the planet have been used up and industry crashes down. We are currently beyond the sustainable limits of the Earth: sooner or later we will collapse.

This is why The Revolution is important: The System must collapse before humanity is so far technologized that we face extinction when reality returns.

Humans have the need to set, work towards and achieve certain goals. This is part of what Kaczynski calls the "power process", a process rooted deep in human biology. The primitive man, had clear biological needs and to provide for these needs was his goal. He had clear goals, a difficult but fulfilling path to attaining them, and the satisfaction of achieving them was especially fulfilling, as failing to satisfy his needs would result in death.
So modern man, deeply unsatisfied and demoralized with his way of life, finds other activities to satisfy his need for completing the power process. These are the activities that Kaczynski calls "surrogate activities". Surrogate activities include artificial goals that are set up simply to have something to work towards, in order to simulate the power process and search for some form of fulfillment.

THE “BAD” PARTS OF TECHNOLOGY CANNOT BE SEPARATED FROM THE “GOOD” PARTS.

A further reason why industrial society cannot be reformed in favor of freedom is that modern technology is a unified system in which all parts are dependent on one another. You can't get rid of the "bad" parts of technology and retain only the "good" parts. Take modern medicine, for example. Progress in medical science depends on progress in chemistry, physics, biology, computer science and other fields. Advanced medical treatments require expensive, high-tech equipment that can be made available only by a technologically progressive, economically rich society. Clearly you can't have much progress in medicine without the whole technological system and everything that goes
with it.
