Liða (Liþa or Litha) was the OE word for summer, Ærra Liða being the name for the month which fell around our June, Æftera Liða was the name for July and is cognate with the Slavic term léto, also meaning summer.

Liþa is also cognate with the OE word Liþe which meant ‘calm’ and this is how Bede described the English summer - ‘Litha is called calm or navigable, that is in both the month and the pleasant serenity of the breezes and is usual to navigate the sea's surface'. It is interesting that he also associated the month with navigation (sailing) as the OE verb líðian meat to sail or travel. We find the same concept with the rune name Sigel (the sun) and the phonetically similar ‘segl’ meaning to sail.

Mainstream thought and religion try to make us believe we are less than we are. We are told we are sinners, that we are undeserving or privileged, that we are a minuscule dot and nothing in the bigger picture or the eyes of "god'. But we are more powerful than we realize. As Men and Women coming together naturally we are capable of creating another life. That makes us as magical and powerful as any "creator". All the amazing architecture, art, music, technology, etc, we have created with our passion and our genius and labor, still do not come close to what we can create naturally as just Man and Woman coming together. What else are we capable of that we haven't realized yet? Together as Man and Woman we are more powerful than they let us believe. 🌿

It’s the June full moon tonight marking the start of Ærra-Liða. A rural English name for this moon was the Rose moon.

We have the Sunstead in a few weeks so tonight, my family and I will include toasts to Sunna (Sunne) in our rites and also Môna – the moon. It was over the summer (Liða) months that a third Liða month was sometimes added to bring the solar cycle and lunar calendar back into sync – the same way the modern leap year does nowadays.

Hjuki and Bill (from Norse myth) are the names of two children who Môna took as servants. Their tale survives in the English nursery rhyme ‘Jack and Jill’. Môna is the ‘man in the moon’ and is a measurer of time, indeed the root of word ‘moon’ comes from *meh meaning ‘to measure’.
