The Wilde-Mändle-Tanz (Dance of the Wild Men) is an Approximately 2000 years old or more pagan tradition in Oberstdorf, situated in the Bavarian Alps. Performed every 5 years. The dancers are from old Oberstdorf families and perform in a unique costume made of Moss that only grows in the Alps with a holly crown and a belt of Fir branches. The Dance is said to represent actual Wild Men, as they are adamant they existed and are not a myth. The dance begins with the Wild Men slowly revealing themselves, referencing the shy nature of the Wild Men. Then it becomes more energetic full of jumping and drinking of beer or mead. Reminiscent of Krampus and Perchten Runs. While often attributed to Donar the tradition actually goes back to Celtic times, and might relate more to The Green Man or Moss King. Though one thing agreed upon is the tradition is done to connect and honor the sun, starry world, forces of nature, and the gods.-TLK
