There were a few smart surveillance kids when I was in high school, but they had to hunt them down to send them to me, because I was in a lot of honors classes, and they needed kids who could keep up there. But the majority of them were not “academically inclined.” At the time, I was baffled they didn’t even try, and would end up in classes in high school with tests on how pocket change would add up. Now, looking back, they would go home, and their parents were probably dragging them on surveillance gigs in the car for a few hours, they probably spent a few hours listening in houses nearby, and on top of it all, they knew the academics would not affect their life path, since it is all corrupt, and the smart kids were going to be sabotaged. Most likely they want these cameras as a cover to help them parallel construct cases they have from the Stasi surveillance. They need a plausible way they are closing cases which does not entail admitting they have neighborhood units listening in people’s houses illegally, following them when out shopping and driving around, and basically documenting everything that goes on anywhere in every neighborhood. However the push for these cameras could also be related to some move which is coming, either their side or our’s, and they are afraid of not being in complete control of the citizens when it goes down. They could even be seeing the surveillance is going to be revealed, and taken down, and they know former targets are going to try and take out their tormentors, and if there is absolutely no surveillance, it will be a total bloodbath, but they cannot exactly keep vehicular driving around while people are enraged. Perhaps they think the cameras are a viable compromise. But now towns are getting rid of them because they are a political loser and here they are hoping they can keep them running, despite that. It is always possible there is a hot target there, a former Marine or something who is pissed beyond all measure, and who they know will start dropping bodies at the first opportunity when the surveillance comes down.
