There is a small possibility irregular and sharp compression waves in the medium you are in somehow disrupts their impact weapon.
Observations:
Crushing ice may create this effect locally within the skull.
They may wait to hit you at night with the weapon partly because you are motionless, but also possibly in part because there is less ambient sharp compression waves about in the air around you.
Water may disrupt the weapon as in water all noise transmits more aggressively, and carries farther, having more effect.
I know the one study I have seen on a remote weapon capable of rendering someone unconscious, used ultrasound waves at specific frequencies. In water the higher the frequency of the sound, the less effectively it travels. Sound can also be used to apply force, such as in experiments where frogs were levitated using sound waves.
I already believe they deploy a matrix of microphones and geophones around a target residence to allow them to pinpoint and target specific spots within the residence for acoustic monitoring, by exploiting a knowledge of waveform travel times from the targeted point to each microphone and geophone.
This uses a principle similar to that used in GPS where signal travel times to a target are used to triangulate its position relative to the emitters. In this way, they can tease out the waveform from the targeted point in the feed at each microphone, based on its appropriate arrival time at each mic from the targeted point. Since sounds from other points will arrive at each microphone in a different pattern of relative arrival times, they can be removed at each mic as they are found and identified. Thus the waveforms which arrive at the right times can be isolated, and you can then overlay them, and create a pure, amplified measurement of just the sound at the targeted spot, devoid of all other background noise.
If this system was combined with ultrasound emitters at each microphone, the sound from each emitter could be focused in nodes easily by emitting the waves so they could converge and overlap at any point in the zone surrounded by the microphones and emitters, and maybe outside of it somewhat as well.
By combining the readings from the microphones, and AI could generate a precise 3D model of the pressures/vibrations at every point, with the ability to precisely emit waveforms at precise times to create pressures/vibrations at points. All coordinated by an AI, it would make a very powerful system, possibly capable of generating force, or unconsciousness, or maybe even voices inside of heads, according to established scientific research.
This is preliminary, very preliminary. They could be turning it off as I turn up the sound, just to lead me down this path. Or, given a week they may engineer a way around the sound. I will have to do more longer-term testing, I only put it here as I believe any potential advance must be shared as early as possible in this environment in an attempt to lock it in place in our movement before it is lost.

Of course killing brilliant scientists could also just fit with a model of elites who are killing off those who could advance the plebes, and produce a society of plebes able to see and challenge the elites who rule them one day. I also disagree with the idea of cattle mutilations as a means to get stem cells to make Cow meat for eating. I would think a sufficiently advanced entity would at most engineer a photosynthetic yeast to make everything they needed, and a process to make it delicious. I base that on a complex model of what food is (energy stored as carbon-carbon bonds, which are broken and reallocated into all the different types of chemical bonds in the body). But she asks interesting questions, and she did get herself killed, so she was getting close to something important.
