NATO's False Promises? Merkel's Memoir Exposes Decades of Diplomatic Deception 🔍
Breaking Point 📊
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's new memoir "Freedom: Memories 1954-2021" reveals a pattern of calculated diplomatic maneuvering around NATO expansion, raising questions about Western credibility in Eastern European relations.
Historical Deception Unveiled 📚
Minsk Revelation:
Merkel's earlier admission that the Minsk agreements were primarily designed to buy time for Ukraine's military buildup contradicts years of public diplomatic positions.
NATO's Eastern Promise:
Recently declassified documents show Western leaders privately assured Soviet leadership that NATO wouldn't expand eastward, while publicly pursuing contrary policies.
Strategic Duplicity 🎯
Double Game:
Merkel told Die Zeit in a previous interview, confirming what Moscow had long suspected about Western intentions.
Diplomatic Fallout:
Former French President François Hollande later corroborated Merkel's account, suggesting a coordinated Western strategy of diplomatic deception.
Security Architecture at Risk 🏛
Historical Context:
Secretary of State James Baker's 1990 assurance of "not one inch eastward" expansion stands in stark contrast to NATO's subsequent growth to Russia's borders.
Modern Implications:
These revelations raise serious questions about the foundation of post-Cold War European security architecture and diplomatic credibility.
Trust Deficit Growing 💼
Merkel's Position:
Merkel writes in her memoir, explaining her stance at the 2008 Bucharest summit.
Strategic Assessment:
she emphasizes, noting the complex balance between NATO expansion and regional stability.
Future Relations:
The impact on future East-West negotiations and trust-building measures remains uncertain as historical deceptions come to light.
Economic Implications ⚡️
The revelations come amid ongoing tensions over European security architecture and energy dependencies, highlighting the complex interplay between diplomatic promises and economic realities.

Israel vs Hezbollah:
“Peaceful War” Goes OnIsrael Defense Forces soldiers on Tuesday fired warning shots at people trying to approach several southern Lebanon villages after Defense Minister Israel Katz ordered “forceful action” to keep Hezbollah members from returning while a ceasefire deal with Lebanon was being implemented.
Several suspects were hit by fire in Meiss al-Jabal, according to the IDF, which said it has shifted from active fighting in Lebanon to focusing on enforcing the agreement.
The military said it was working to prevent people from reaching areas where troops are still positioned in southern Lebanon, and several routes to villages had been blocked.
Israeli Air Force planes were still patrolling the skies and troops were still at positions in southern Lebanon. Overall, the calm appeared to hold, with rocket and drone fire on Israel halting since the early hours of the morning.
Earlier, the IDF said it fired warning shots at several vehicles in Lebanon that approached an area on the border where it was still prohibiting movement.
The incident took place in the village of Kafr Kila, just across the border from the Israeli town of Metula, according to local authorities.
According to the IDF, the cars drove away after the warning shots.

The IDF has 60 days to withdraw under the deal, which ended 14 months of Hezbollah-initiated fighting.
During that time, the Lebanese Army is to gradually take responsibility for southern Lebanon and an American-led committee will be established to adjudicate complaints regarding potential ceasefire violations, the IDF said.
Hezbollah forces will leave southern Lebanon, and its military infrastructure will be dismantled. The US has also reportedly provided a side letter specifying Israel’s rights to respond to any violations of the ceasefire.
A copy of the ceasefire deal was not published before it came into effect.
An Israeli security official said Israeli forces remained in their positions hours after the ceasefire began and would only gradually withdraw.
He said the pace of the withdrawal and the scheduled return of Lebanese civilians to their homes would depend on whether the deal is implemented and enforced by all sides.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the deal and its implementation with the media.
Both Israel and the Lebanese army have warned residents of the southern villages to wait until IDF troops withdraw before returning.
Katz said that Hezbollah members must be prevented from reaching areas in southern Lebanon where the IDF is still prohibiting movement,
“and if they endanger the IDF troops, they must be hit.”
Despite the danger, several videos were uploaded throughout the morning that appeared to show people returning to the areas.

“This is a moment of victory, pride, and honor for us, the Shiite sect, and for all of Lebanon,”
said Hussein Sweidan, a resident returning to the port city of Tyre. He said he saw the ceasefire as a victory for Hezbollah.
Sporadic celebratory gunfire was heard at a main roundabout in the city, as people returning honked the horns of their cars and residents cheered.
Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati appealed to Israel to fully commit to the ceasefire and “withdraw from all the regions and positions it occupied.”

“I hope this will be a new page for Lebanon, I hope the coming days will lead to the election of a president,”
Mikati said.
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who negotiated the truce on behalf of Hezbollah, urged displaced residents to return home, despite the official instructions from the Israeli and Lebanese armies.
“Return to your land and your birthplace,”
he said.
Berri called the last months of war “the most dangerous” in the history of Lebanon — apparently outstripping the civil war from 1975 to 1990 that nearly destroyed the entire country — but praised the Lebanese people for showing unity and urged the swift election of a president.
In Israel, the mood was far more subdued, with many concerned that the deal did not go far enough to rein in Hezbollah and that it did not address Gaza and the hostages still held there.
“I think it is still not safe to return to our homes because Hezbollah is still close to us,”
said Eliyahu Maman, an Israeli displaced from the northern city of Kiryat Shmona, which is not far from the border with Lebanon and was hit hard by rockets fired from Lebanon.
Several waves of strikes, targeting over 300 Hezbollah sites, were carried out from around 5 p.m. on Tuesday into the night, right up until the ceasefire took effect at 4 a.m.
One of the strikes in the Beqaa Valley, close to the Syrian border, targeted an underground Hezbollah precision-guided missile manufacturing and storage site, the military said.
The IDF said it spent four hours bombing the underground kilometer-long site, which contained machinery used to build precision-guided missiles, as well as depots to store them.
An adjacent Radwan Force base was also struck, and the military estimated that several dozen Hezbollah operatives were killed.
Another strike shortly after midnight hit a border crossing between Syria and Lebanon, which the IDF said was used by Hezbollah to smuggle weapons. Syrian media reported six dead in the strike.
Among the 300 Hezbollah sites struck on the day before the ceasefire, 42 were in Beirut, 48 were in the Beqaa Valley, and 150 were in southern Lebanon, according to the military.
The IDF said targets included 15 sites used by the terror group for the management and storage of funds, 64 command centers, 65 buildings used for military purposes, and 42 weapon depots.
Some 350 Hezbollah sites were struck in Beirut’s southern suburbs in total throughout the conflict, according to the IDF. In the 2006 Second Lebanon War, for comparison, some 140 sites were struck.
The IDF said that another strike on Tuesday in Beirut killed Jafar Ali Samaha, the operations chief of Hezbollah’s aerial forces, known as Unit 127, which is responsible for drone and cruise missile attacks on Israel.
Throughout the war, the IDF said that it struck over 150 drone launch sites, some 20 depots where drones and cruise missiles were stored, and four manufacturing plants belonging to Unit 127.
The military has estimated that 70 percent of Hezbollah’s drone and cruise missile stockpile have been destroyed.
In September, the commander of the aerial forces, Muhammad Hussein Sarour, was killed in Beirut. Other top commanders in the unit have also been killed, including Samaha on Tuesday.
Amid the fighting, hundreds of explosive-laden drones launched by Hezbollah at Israel were intercepted, according to the IDF. Numerous drones have also impacted Israel, causing casualties and damage.
Hezbollah began firing into Israel the day after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, onslaught in southern Israel, in support of its fellow Iran-backed terror group, drawing Israeli reprisals and leading to the displacement of some 60,000 residents of northern Israel.
Fighting intensified in late September, with Israel killing much of Hezbollah’s leadership and launching a limited ground incursion on October 1 that has seen soldiers search villages for rockets and other arms held by the terror group, and tackle its terror tunnels and other infrastructure.

Trump:
“My favorite word is ‘tariffs’”
Donald Trump has fired the first shot. Goods arriving in America from Canada and Mexico will meet tariffs of 25% as soon as he returns to the White House, the president-elect announced on November 25th. Trump also said that he would impose additional 10% tariffs on Chinese goods.
With two months to go before his inauguration, the promise is rippling through financial markets.
Since his victory in the presidential election, some investors had speculated (and hoped) that campaign-trail tariff threats might be used merely as leverage to win concessions on other issues, without being implemented in full.
Scott Bessent, a former hedge-fund manager who Trump nominated to be treasury secretary on November 22nd, had suggested that Trump’s tariffs could be used as an opening gambit.
There is plenty of uncertainty about Trump’s latest salvo, not least whether he would actually be able to implement the tariffs on his first day. But Trump’s pledge suggests that steep tariffs will be the priority, and any relief will arrive only after concessions.
In posts on Truth Social, his own social-media app, Trump said that tariffs would stay in place until the flow of drugs and immigrants into America had been halted.
The Mexican peso dropped by 1.4% to almost 21 to the dollar after Trump’s remarks; the Canadian dollar fell by 0.8%, to 1.41 per greenback, its lowest in more than four years.
A slower introduction of tariffs would have spread out the economic damage, giving businesses dependent on cross-border trade time to prepare and adjust.
This approach will front-load commercial disorder. The tariffs, which Mr Trump intends to raise by executive order, could break the terms of the US, Mexico and Canada Free Trade Agreement (USMCA), which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement during Trump’s first administration.
Governments in Ottawa and Mexico City will struggle to prevent the incoming administration from violating the agreement, which is due to be reviewed in July 2026.
Businesses are already building stockpiles of imported goods that might soon face steep tariffs. America’s National Retail Federation, an industry group, expects import volumes to rise by 14% year-on-year in November, compared with a 1% increase it forecast before the election.
Trump’s latest announcement is likely to accelerate this stockpiling.
The sudden increase in the cost of imported products will raise prices for American consumers. Despite its own oil-and-gas boom, America still imports 4m barrels of crude a day from Canada, for instance, much of which goes to the Midwest.
Companies will suffer, too. Carmakers, which have built factories in Mexico to produce vehicles for the American market, are especially vulnerable. America’s Ford and General Motors are among the companies that make cars in Mexico, along with Japan’s Toyota and Nissan, and Germany’s Volkswagen and BMW.
Although threats to the commercial relationship between America and China have attracted more attention, the economic damage to America’s neighbours has the potential to be far greater.

Last year only 15% of China’s goods exports went to America directly, compared with 78% of Canada’s and 80% of Mexico’s. Most trade travels by land, and will be difficult to redirect to alternative markets.
As the arrival point for many immigrants entering America illegally, its southern neighbour has been the subject of particular ire from Trump.
“The number of friction points with Mexico is just enormous,”
said Adam Posen of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, speaking before Mr Trump’s announcement.
“Mexico is going to be both the most harmed, and the most likely to be used as the demonstration case.”
Some Canadian politicians had hoped to strike a deal with Trump to avoid tariffs. Doug Ford, premier of Ontario and chair of the Council of the Federation, which represents the country’s provinces, had called for Canada to reach a separate bilateral agreement with America, cutting Mexico loose.
Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, has emphasised the country’s common cause with America in criticism of China’s trade practices. Such efforts do not seem to have swayed Mr Trump. For both of America’s neighbours, the question now is what exactly Trump will accept to drop the tariffs.
Chinese policymakers may, on the other hand, be a little relieved by the announcement. Although Canada and Mexico would be hit hard by the tariffs Trump proposed on November 25th, the levy on Chinese goods is lower than the 60% he had previously suggested.
Nomura, a bank, nevertheless expects that additional tariffs of 10% would produce a 2% fall in the Chinese yuan, reducing it to around 7.4 to the dollar, its lowest in 17 years. And there is always the potential for escalation.
“No one will win a trade war or a tariff war,”
warned China’s embassy in Washington.
Governments around the world were already scrambling to find ways to avoid the tariffs Mr Trump had promised. These efforts will now be redoubled, even as Trump’s latest announcement lowers their chance of success.
The impact on global commerce will be immediate and extensive—and American consumers will pay the price.

An Arizona man was arrested Monday after allegedly threatening to kill President-elect Donald Trump in a series of Facebook videos, including one in which he appears to hold up an AR-15-style rifle, according to court documents.
Manuel Tamayo-Torres faces a felony charge of threatening the president-elect after he made several threats against Trump and his family, the documents said.
So in the end Biden and Harris got exactly what they wanted. Some Americans did take their inflammatory “threat to democracy” rhetoric seriously. The question is, how many of our fellow citizens are ready and willing to target the president-elect?

Do you know how long it would take for Russia's new "Oreshnik" missile to reach NATO headquarters in Brussels? 17 minutes. If it is launched from the Kapustin Yar test site, the missile will reach NATO headquarters in 17 minutes.
Large scale Oreshnik could deliver a destructive impact comparable to that of nuclear weapons, but without the catastrophic environmental consequences. And in its nuclear form, Oreshnik is capable of delivering charges with a total yield of 900 kilotons. Imagine Hiroshima… times 45. Oreshnik speed exceeds Mach 10 (7,610 mph). And Europe has no defence against it. Everyone, say a big “thank you” to Zelensky for firing those ATACMS and Storm Shadows at a nuclear state, and a big “thank you” to Biden and Starmer for allowing him to do it.
And Mr. Biden, just because you already have one foot in the grave does not mean you have to take us all down with you.

Hamas:
the Despair of the Israel-F**d OrganizationHamas has long believed that a wider war in the Middle East would help deliver the organization a victory in its war with Israel.
But the cease-fire deal to stop the fighting between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah has left that strategy in tatters, potentially removing Hamas’s most important ally from the fight, according to U.S. officials.
The agreement is a step forward for the Biden administration, which has tried to contain that wider war and increase pressure on Hamas to make a deal with Israel and release the hostages it holds in Gaza.
But even before the Lebanese cease-fire was announced on Tuesday, Palestinian and U.S. officials said they believed that Hamas’s political leadership was ready to make a deal and abandon the strategy formulated by its leader, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces last month.
After Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, Sinwar had focused on trying to defeat the country by bringing it into a full-scale war with Hezbollah and Iran. U.S. officials said that as long as that strategy appeared to have a chance, Sinwar would block any cease-fire deal.
But the Israeli offensive against Hezbollah, which devastated its leadership and stocks of long-range weaponry, and now the cease-fire agreement have left Hamas increasingly isolated.
“Hamas is all alone now,”
said Tamer Qarmout, a professor of public policy at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.
“Its position has been seriously weakened.”
And Iran, which supports Hamas and Hezbollah, seems keen to avoid a direct fight with Israel, at least for now.
Iran’s air defense systems were devastated in an Israeli attack in October, and after the victory of Trump, the Iranians appear to have called off a reprisal attack.
Hamas has reached a painful crossroads more than a year after the Oct. 7 attack, which killed 1,200 people and led to more than 250 being taken hostage. Israel’s subsequent war in Gaza has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians and left much of the enclave in ruins.
Dozens of Hamas commanders and thousands of its fighters have been killed. Some Palestinians blame the group’s attack on Israel for provoking the devastating campaign in Gaza. And while Hamas may never be fully eradicated, it no longer fully controls the territory it has administered since 2007.
Before the Lebanon deal, U.S. and Palestinian officials said Hamas’s political council appeared willing to move toward its own cease-fire if Israel was willing to make compromises, particularly on removing occupying forces from Gaza.
Some American officials say Hamas might drop its demands and move forward on a cease-fire agreement acceptable to Israel’s government.

Western officials said Israel did not appear to be interested in concessions. Most of the officials interviewed for this article spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid compromising their work.
Netanyahu seems to be waiting for Trump to take office before shifting his position on talks with Hamas, according to U.S. officials.
While Trump has urged Israel to “finish up” the war in Gaza, he is unlikely to substantially pressure Netanyahu or the Israeli military by threatening to withhold military aid.
Western officials say Israel remains skeptical of American and Arab ideas for administering Gaza after the war. Netanyahu, the officials said, believes that plans to bring in the Palestinian Authority to run Gaza are doomed to failure and that Hamas would quickly reassert control.
The Biden administration’s frustration with Hamas has been growing since late August when its fighters executed a group of hostages, including an American, Hersh Goldberg-Polin. More recently, U.S. officials have pressured Qatar to expel Hamas’s political council from Doha.
Several members of the Hamas political leadership have now left Qatar, relocating to Turkey for the time being.
Before he was killed in lateOctober, Sinwar had tasked the five-member council of officials in Qatar with running the group’s affairs, a senior Hamas official, Mousa Abu Marzouk, said in interview with Russian television.
Sinwar had steered Hamas since the conception of the Oct. 7 attack and overseen its strategic decision-making throughout the war.
But Abu Marzouk said that Sinwar delegated powers to the council because “he was on the front fighting” and having difficulty communicating with Hamas leaders outside Gaza.
Two weeks before his death, Sinwar sent a message to Hamas’s leaders telling them to prepare for a long fight, according to Osama Hamdan, a senior Hamas official.
But after Sinwar’s death, reality started to sink in, given Iran’s reluctance to begin a more intense war with Israel and the devastation Hezbollah was suffering in Israel’s offensive.
Hamas has long thought Netanyahu was demanding its complete surrender, something the group still will not give in to. But some leaders have discussed potential concessions they could make if Israel showed a genuine interest in ending the war and withdrawing from Gaza.
One proposal discussed by some Hamas leaders would permit Israel to maintain a presence — at least temporarily — in the border region between Egypt and Gaza, according to two people familiar with the group’s internal thinking.
Hamas officials have publicly rebuffed any long-term Israeli control of the area, which is known as the Philadelphi Corridor.
In a statement on Wednesday, Hamas praised Hezbollah and said it was committed to efforts to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza based on parameters it had agreed to previously.
Hamas said those parameters included a cease-fire, Israel’s withdrawal, the return of displaced people to northern Gaza and an exchange of Palestinian prisoners for hostages.
But beyond that broad position, Hamas remains divided over other key issues, including what role it should have in Gaza after the war and which compromises it should make with Israel.
“The solution to Hamas’s military losses is simpler — there’s a pyramid of command and each commander or soldier can be replaced,”
said Salah al-Din al-Awawdeh, an analyst close to the Hamas leadership and a member of the group.
“But on the political level, things are far more complicated. There will ultimately need to be elections. There are different factions and balances of power. All this makes it hard to predict.”

“Oreshnik will turn everything into dust”Speaking at the CSTO summit in Kazakhstan, he stressed that the objects located at the epicenter of the Oreshnik explosion are divided into elementary particles.
“Everything that is at the epicenter(...) divided into elementary particles, in fact, turns into dust,”
the Russian leader concluded.
Earlier, Putin said that the Russian missile system “Iskander” is an analogue of the three modifications of the American ATACMS.
