Employment attorney Diane Seltzer has won a closely watched contest to lead the D.C. Bar Association, defeating securities lawyer Brad Bondi in a race with record turnout.

Seltzer tallied more than 90 percent of the electronic vote with "no issues or irregularities" in the voting system, D.C. Bar CEO Bob Spagnoletti said in a press call Monday. More than 38,000 people voted in the race, more than five times as many voters in a typical election, he said.

Sending troops to LA an 'unnecessary escalation,' says California attorney general

California's attorney general says the Trump administration's mobilization of 700 Marines to Los Angeles to support dual deployments of National Guard troops in the city is an "unnecessary escalation."

In an interview with Morning Edition, California Attorney General Rob Bonta insisted that local law enforcement are using available resources to "meet the moment" of protests against immigration raids that, at times, have escalated to sporadic confrontations with police, blocked roads and cars being set on fire.

Protests grow across the U.S. as people push against Trump's mass deportation policies

Those were the words thousands of people chanted near the city's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office, and throughout the streets of Manhattan Tuesday night as part of a series of nationwide rallies against President Trump's immigration sweeps and the deployment of the U.S. military in California.

Across the country, protesters also took to the streets in Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle, Dallas and half a dozen other cities. The Trump administration has vowed to arrest 3,000 migrants a day. To accomplish that goal, the Department of Homeland Security has conducted raids all across the country — from a parking lot in a Los Angeles Home Depot, to a Dominican neighborhood in Puerto Rico, to a meatpacking plant in Nebraska.

The June 9 memo sent to regional directors by National Park Service comptroller Jessica Bowron and leaked to NPR states the instructions come in response to President Trump's March "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History" executive order and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum's follow-up order last month requesting its implementation. Trump's original order included a clause ordering Burgum to remove content from sites that "inappropriately disparages Americans past or living and instead focuses on the greatness of the achievements and progress of the American people."

More than 400 CDC staff may be called back to work after being laid off in April

Federal officials on Wednesday appear to have "revoked" the layoffs of more than 400 employees of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who had been abruptly dismissed months ago, which may reinstate the entire staff of a laboratory that tracks viral hepatitis and most employees in one of the CDC's environmental health divisions.

The workers were among thousands that the Department of Health and Human Services laid off on April 1 as part of a reduction in force at the agency, most of whom are still out of work.
