A 5.2 magnitude earthquake strikes Southern California

A 5.2 magnitude earthquake shook southern California at approximately 10 a.m., local time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The extent of any damage caused by the quake is still unclear.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's press office announced via social media that he has been briefed on the situation. The state is currently coordinating with local authorities to access damage and determine emergency response needs. The epicenter of the quake was located about 2 miles south of Julian, Calif., a community situated roughly 60 miles northeast of San Diego. The earthquake struck the area at a depth of 8 miles, according to the USGS.

Ex-deputy convicted of killing Christian Glass sentenced to 3 years

After three years and two trials, the former Clear Creek County deputy Andrew Buen was sentenced to the maximum three years in the 2022 death of Christian Glass. Buen appeared in court in an orange jail suit on Monday morning with his attorneys as Judge Catherine Cheroutes handed down the sentence for criminally negligent homicide.  

“In my mind, this is about the homicide, that is and always was what this has been about — is Mr. Buen killed Christian Glass. And that deserves punishment,” Cheroutes said.

Once again, Harvey Weinstein goes on trial for sex crimes in New York today

Former film producer Harvey Weinstein is on trial for sex crimes, again. Jury selection begins on Tuesday in a lower Manhattan courtroom, where Weinstein, once one of the most powerful people in Hollywood, must answer charges that he sexually assaulted three different women. It is Weinstein's third trial in just over five years. In 2020, he was convicted of two felony sex crimes in New York. Two years later he was convicted of three counts in California.

Last year, an appeals court overturned Weinstein's New York conviction, concluding that the trial judge had improperly allowed the testimony of several witnesses who described alleged sexual misconduct that was not charged in the indictment. Weinstein's 23-year sentence was thereby voided. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said soon after that his office planned to retry Weinstein. In September, Bragg announced an additional grand jury indictment that wasn't included in previous cases.

However, Judge Paula Xinis criticized government lawyers for not showing evidence of efforts to bring him back. She ordered the government to demonstrate what steps it's taking to comply with a court ruling mandating Garcia's release. His attorneys will be allowed to question officials under oath over the next two weeks. The Supreme Court recently ruled the administration must begin the process of releasing Garcia, who was deported despite a court order and sent to a dangerous prison in El Salvador.

Judge demands to know if White House is helping return wrongly deported Maryland man

A Maryland federal judge wants to find out if government officials are acting in "bad faith" in the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly sent to a notorious Salvadoran prison. Judge Paula Xinis on Tuesday called for a two-week process of "expedited discovery," including questioning government officials under oath, to learn whether the government is doing enough to try to bring him back.

Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen, had lived in Maryland for about 15 years before he was deported to El Salvador last month, despite being granted protections by an U.S. immigration judge. He is in custody in Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele's mega-prison, known as CECOT. The Supreme Court said the Trump administration should facilitate his return.

The Trump administration has drafted a memo to Congress outlining its intent to end nearly all federal funding for public media, which includes NPR and PBS, according to a White House official who spoke to NPR.
