U.S. stock markets bounce back after Trump tariffs shock — but nerves abound

U.S. stock markets bounced back on Tuesday after several days of sustained sell-offs that saw equity markets crater since President Trump's announcement of global trading tariffs.

The recovery in Wall Street comes after shares in Europe and Asia rebounded earlier following a tumultuous day on global markets on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial average was up over 1,200 points, or more than 3% in early trading on Tuesday after three sessions of steep falls. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq were also up more than 3%.

U.S. says it is now monitoring immigrants' social media for antisemitism

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services has announced it will begin screening immigrants' social media for evidence of antisemitic activity as grounds for denying immigration benefit requests. The screenings will affect people applying for permanent residence status as well as foreigners affiliated with educational institutions. The policy will go into effect immediately.

In a statement issued Wednesday morning, the Department of Homeland Security said it will "protect the homeland from extremists and terrorist aliens, including those who support antisemitic terrorism, violent antisemitic ideologies and antisemitic terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, or [the Houthis]."

Trump administration changes course on in-person requirements for Social Security

The Trump administration is further backing off the in-person requirements it announced for Americans seeking services at the Social Security Administration that were set to go into effect Monday.

Liz Huston, a spokesperson for the White House, said in a statement to NPR on Thursday that telephone services will continue for people seeking services through the agency. "President Trump has repeatedly promised to protect Social Security and uproot waste, fraud and abuse across the federal government," she said. "The Social Security anti-fraud team has worked around the clock in person to improve technological capabilities and they are now able to identify fraud on claims filed over the telephone."
