Justice Department suspends lawyer who criticized Trump administration in deportation case

The U.S. Department of Justice placed top immigration lawyer Erez Reuveni on leave after he criticized the Trump administration’s mistaken deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvador. A federal judge ruled the deportation was illegal and ordered Garcia, currently held in a violent Salvadoran prison, to be returned to the U.S. by Monday night. Attorney General Pam Bondi said DOJ lawyers must fully support the government’s position or face consequences.

Nationwide 'Hands Off!' protests erupt against Trump and Musk

Demonstrators gathered across the country on Saturday, many animated by differing issues, but united in opposition to the Trump administration with the single message: "Hands off!" Organizers said more than 1,300 "Hands Off!" rallies of varying sizes took place on Saturday.

Since President Trump took office in January, various protests have taken place against his administration's plans and policies — from the mass firing of federal workers to immigration raids to the involvement of billionaire Elon Musk in the federal government. Saturday's protests appeared to be the most widespread to date of Trump's second term.

At least 16 dead in flooding and tornadoes as storms slash from Texas to Ohio

Another round of torrential rain and flash flooding came Saturday for parts of the South and Midwest already heavily waterlogged by days of severe storms that also spawned deadly tornadoes. Forecasters warned that rivers in some places would continue to rise for days.

Day after day of heavy rains have pounded the central U.S., rapidly swelling waterways and prompting a series of flash flood emergencies in from Texas to Ohio. The National Weather Service said dozens of locations in multiple states were expected to reach what the agency calls " major flood stage," with extensive flooding of structures, roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure possible.

Brooklyn Man Allegedly Stabs Four Young Relatives; Shot by NYPD

On April 6, 2025, in Brooklyn's Bensonhurst neighborhood, 49-year-old Longqian Chen allegedly attacked four young female relatives, aged 8, 11, 13, and 16, with a meat cleaver inside their home on 84th Street. An 11-year-old victim managed to call 911, reporting that her uncle was stabbing her and her siblings. Upon arrival, NYPD officers forced entry after hearing screams and encountered Chen wielding a blood-covered meat cleaver.

After he refused orders to drop the weapon and advanced toward them, officers shot him. Chen was hospitalized in critical condition, while the four girls sustained serious injuries but are expected to survive. A fifth child escaped unharmed to seek help. The motive remains under investigation.

President Trump defends tariffs amid market mayhem: 'Sometimes you have to take medicine'

As U.S. stock futures pointed to another major drop, President Donald Trump defended his sweeping tariffs Sunday night, saying, “Sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something.” The Dow futures fell about 1,000 points, signaling more market turmoil following the worst selloff since the COVID pandemic. Trump closes loophole used by American shoppers to buy Chinese goods tariff-free

While President Donald Trump was levying massive tariffs on goods from around the world this week, he also moved to pinch off a popular trade loophole that allows American shoppers to buy low-cost goods directly from retailers in China and Hong Kong.

Popular e-commerce companies, including giants Shein and Temu, use the so-called "de minimis" exemption to ship tens of millions of packages — everything from end tables and lamps to shoes and underwear — to U.S. consumers every year. So long as each individual package is worth $800 or less, they aren't required to pay import fees or go through typical customs inspections. But under an executive order signed by Trump Wednesday, that loophole will close on May 2.

RFK Jr. visits epicenter of Texas measles outbreak after death of second child

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. visited the epicenter of Texas' still-growing measles outbreak on Sunday, the same day a funeral was held for a second young child who was not vaccinated and died from a measles-related illness.

Kennedy said in a social media post that he was working to "control the outbreak" and went to Gaines County to comfort the families who have buried two young children. He was seen late Sunday afternoon outside of a Mennonite church where the funeral services were held, but he did not attend a nearby news conference held by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about the outbreak.

Netanyahu is set to meet Trump to talk tariffs and hostages in Gaza

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is in Washington for a second meeting since President Trump took office and as Israel's war in Gaza marks a year and a half. Netanyahu says he expects to discuss efforts to release Israeli hostages from Gaza, as well as new U.S. tariffs. The Trump administration imposed 17% tariffs on Israel as part of new trade measures on goods from many countries.

Netanyahu is facing pressure at home from former Israeli security chiefs, protesters and the families of hostages still held in Gaza to return to ceasefire negotiations, which his far-right coalition has resisted.
