How the Education Department helps students with disabilities get an education
The Department of Education oversees many federal laws that govern how students with and without disabilities experience school.
But IDEA is one of the primary ways the federal government contributes to educating disabled students. The law enshrines the right of every child to "a free and appropriate public education," and it says students with disabilities have a right to individual education programs (IEPs) that lay out the services each child is entitled to. IDEA is also the vehicle through which the federal government sends money to schools to help pay for those services.

Dow sheds 1,700 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq have worst day since 2020 on tariff worries
U.S. stocks fell sharply after President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs, with the Dow dropping nearly 1,700 points and the S&P 500 falling about 275 points. The tariffs, starting April 5, include at least 10% duties on all countries, with higher rates for some, especially Chinaβs trading partners like Vietnam and Bangladesh. Retailers like Walmart, Amazon, and Target saw major losses due to their reliance on Asian imports. Apple also dropped 9.25% because of its China-based manufacturing. Semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors were exempt from this round of tariffs.

Death toll rises as devastating spring storms batter the South and Midwest
The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of "potentially historic" rainfall sweeping across the American South and Midwest through the weekend. This intense weather pattern has already resulted in several deaths and continues to pose a significant risk to the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in the region.
Reports about the number of fatalities have varied but at least seven people have died in Tennessee, Missouri and Indiana due to these violent storms, according to The Associated Press. "This flooding event will be a marathon β not a sprint," the NWS said in a statement on X, warning the public about the storms. "Any flash and riverine flooding across these areas will have the potential to become catastrophic and life-threatening."

Trump downplays the role of far-right activist in firings of NSC staff
President Trump is downplaying reports that far-right activist Laura Loomer influenced National Security Council firings on Thursday.
Trump confirmed that some number of people were fired but would not specify how many or why. "Always we'll let go (of) people β people that we don't like or people that we don't think can do the job or people that may have loyalties to somebody else," he told reporters on Air Force One Thursday night.

Trump's VA is ending a rescue program that's saved 17,000 military veterans' homes
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said Thursday that it will end a mortgage-rescue program designed to help veterans who have fallen behind on their mortgages keep their homes. But the scant details offered so far by the VA make it unclear whether the program will be replaced by a different rescue program β or whether the move will strand thousands of other vets, many of whom are in financial peril because of the VA's own mistakes.
Tens of thousands of veterans were left facing foreclosure after the VA abruptly cancelled a key part of a pandemic-era mortgage relief program that allowed vets to skip mortgage payments if they had trouble paying. When NPR first uncovered the VA's move in late 2023, there were about 40,000 vets in danger of losing their homes.

Stock markets suffer worst losses since pandemic following Trump tariff plans
The U.S. stock market has lost nearly a year's worth of gains since mid-February, with major drops following President Trump's sweeping tariff announcements. Over two days, the Dow fell 9.2%, the S&P 500 dropped 10.5%, and the Nasdaq declined 11.4%. Despite a strong jobs report showing 228,000 new jobs and a 4.2% unemployment rate, markets continued to slide, especially after China announced 34% retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. Economist Bill Adams noted the jobs data offered little reassurance amid the sharp selloff.

Supreme Court sides with administration over Education Department grants
The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday sided with the Trump administration, at least for now, in a dispute over the Department of Education's freeze of DEI-related grants. The administration has taken several grievances to the high court recently, but this was the first of its legal theories to stick.
By a 5-4 vote, the justices allowed the administration to keep frozen $65 million for teacher training and professional development, halting a lower court order that had temporarily reinstated the grants.

Judge orders the Trump administration to return man who was mistakenly deported
A federal judge in Maryland Friday ordered the Trump administration to take immediate steps to return a Maryland man who was deported to a Salvadoran mega-prison by mistake, setting up another high-stakes clash between the White House and the courts.
"This was an illegal act," U.S. Federal District Judge Paula Xinis told Justice Department lawyers at a federal court hearing in Greenbelt, Maryland about the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who lived in the U.S. legally and had a work permit. Abrego Garcia was arrested and deported last month β despite having been granted protection by an immigration judge in 2019 that should have prevented him from being deported to El Salvador.

Comedian Russell Brand is charged with rape and assault in U.K.
Actor and political pundit Russell Brand is facing multiple charges of rape and sexual assault, London's Metropolitan Police announced on Friday, listing charges that span more than six years. The criminal charges were announced one and a half years after Brand was accused of sexual misconduct by four women in the fall of 2023.
Brand denied those allegations after they emerged, saying that while he had been sexually promiscuous, all of the interactions "were absolutely always consensual." But the women's accounts sparked police inquiry.
