HHS layoffs hit Meals on Wheels and other services for seniors and disabled
The layoffs at the Department of Health and Human Services slashed the staffs of major federal aging, disability and anti-poverty programs, leaving the future of those programs uncertain.
At least 40% of staff got layoff notices and many were turned away at the front door Tuesday when they showed up for work at the Administration for Community Living, or ACL, which coordinates federal policy on aging and disability. That's according to the agency's former director under the Biden Administration, Alison Barkoff, who says she talked to multiple members of her former staff. The agency funds programs that run senior centers and distribute 216 million meals a year to older and disabled people through the Meals on Wheels program.

Cory Booker breaks a 68-year-old Senate record with a 25-hour speech
Sen. Cory Booker devoted all of Monday night and into Tuesday evening on the Senate floor, delivering an impassioned speech in protest of the Trump administration's policies. This effort, which also involved numerous other Democrats, set a record for the longest speech on record given in the chamber.
Booker wiped away tears and placed his hand over his heart as fellow Democrats, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, cheered at the end of his 25-hour and 4-minute speech. Others were seen crying and some rushed to hug the clearly exhausted and sentimental Booker after he spent more than a day at the Senate podium.

GOP retains two House seats in Florida, as Democrats claim 'historic' improvement
Republican candidates have won in two special Congressional elections in Florida, helping the GOP retain its narrow majority in the U.S. House.
In the First Congressional District in Florida's panhandle, the state's former chief financial officer, Jimmy Patronis, defeated Democrat Gay Valimont. In the Sixth District, along Florida's east coast, former state senator Randy Fine beat Democrat Josh Weil. Republicans have a substantial registration edge in both districts. But the results were far closer than those seen in November, suggesting voters may be unhappy with Republicans, President Trump and his agenda.

Val Kilmer, who passed away at 65, once showcased a personal project in 2006βa treehouse on his 6,000-acre ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico. White House reviewing TikTok proposal to lease algorithm from China
The Trump administration is considering a deal to potentially resolve TikTok's legal uncertainty that involves leasing the app's algorithm from Beijing-based owner ByteDance, according to a person directly involved in the talks who is not authorized to speak publicly. Under the plan, a new U.S. entity would be created led by software giant Oracle. ByteDance is expected to retain a minority stake.
The algorithm leasing proposal has been controversial in the White House, according to the source. There is debate among China hawks about whether the plan truly removes ByteDance from having operational control of the app. But the move could circumvent the need for China to approve the deal at a moment when the Trump administration has announced a 34% tariff on Chinese goods.

Trump unveils 10% tariff on all imports, plus reciprocal tariffs on dozens of nations
President Trump has unveiled sweeping "reciprocal tariffs" on goods from the world over, plus a 10% baseline tariff on U.S. imports from all countries, as he seeks to reshape decades of U.S. trade policy despite warnings of higher costs for American businesses and consumers.
The president announced a 10% minimum tariff to apply to goods from all countries. However, certain trading partners will face higher, "reciprocal tariffs" aimed at penalizing them for their trade barriers. Those taxes on imported goods are calculated on a country-by-country basis, and the levels Trump announced for some trading partners are substantial. He said he plans to impose 34% tariffs on China, 20% on the European Union and 24% on Japan, among an array of other trading partners.

How the Education Department helps students with disabilities get an education
The Department of Education oversees many federal laws that govern how students with and without disabilities experience school.
But IDEA is one of the primary ways the federal government contributes to educating disabled students. The law enshrines the right of every child to "a free and appropriate public education," and it says students with disabilities have a right to individual education programs (IEPs) that lay out the services each child is entitled to. IDEA is also the vehicle through which the federal government sends money to schools to help pay for those services.

Dow sheds 1,700 points. S&P 500 and Nasdaq have worst day since 2020 on tariff worries
U.S. stocks fell sharply after President Donald Trump announced sweeping new tariffs, with the Dow dropping nearly 1,700 points and the S&P 500 falling about 275 points. The tariffs, starting April 5, include at least 10% duties on all countries, with higher rates for some, especially Chinaβs trading partners like Vietnam and Bangladesh. Retailers like Walmart, Amazon, and Target saw major losses due to their reliance on Asian imports. Apple also dropped 9.25% because of its China-based manufacturing. Semiconductor and pharmaceutical sectors were exempt from this round of tariffs.

Death toll rises as devastating spring storms batter the South and Midwest
The National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of "potentially historic" rainfall sweeping across the American South and Midwest through the weekend. This intense weather pattern has already resulted in several deaths and continues to pose a significant risk to the lives and livelihoods of millions of people in the region.
Reports about the number of fatalities have varied but at least seven people have died in Tennessee, Missouri and Indiana due to these violent storms, according to The Associated Press. "This flooding event will be a marathon β not a sprint," the NWS said in a statement on X, warning the public about the storms. "Any flash and riverine flooding across these areas will have the potential to become catastrophic and life-threatening."
