Cars, Venezuela, goods from the EU: What's the latest with Trump tariffs?
President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on automobile imports, following recent tariff fluctuations on goods from Canada, Mexico, and countries dealing with Venezuela. His shifting trade policies have caused market uncertainty, with earlier plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico being rolled back due to consumer concerns and stock market declines. The latest move signals a significant escalation in his trade strategy, leaving businesses and consumers bracing for potential economic impacts.

Trump announces new 25% tariff on imported cars and car parts
President Trump said on Wednesday that he will impose 25% tariffs on imported cars and car parts starting next week, using his national security powers to take the action. "I think our automobile business will flourish like it's never flourished before," Trump said in remarks from the Oval Office.
The United Auto Workers union praised the move, saying it could mean more shifts for workers at plants with spare capacity. The latest policy is yet another example of the president's tariff-centric second-term economic agenda. Thus far, Trump has imposed tariffs on Chinese goods, steel and aluminum, and some goods from Canada and Mexico.

A new Utah law is Republicans' latest effort to limit mail ballot return
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox has signed a bill that makes sweeping changes to the state's popular mail voting program, including removing a grace period for postmarked ballots that arrive after Election Day. The new law is part of a larger effort by Republicans to limit the window in which mail ballots can be counted during an election.
Last October a U.S. appeals court sided with the GOP against a Mississippi law that allows mail ballots to be counted if they are postmarked by Election Day but arrive after it. And along with Utah, Republican lawmakers in Kansas on Tuesday limited mail ballot return windows. Other states, including West Virginia, are seeking to join them.

Trump orders feds to scour monuments, memorials for DEI language he says disparages US
President Donald Trump has ordered federal officials to review monuments, memorials, and statues to remove language he believes "inappropriately disparages Americans." The move is part of his broader efforts against DEI initiatives and to promote national patriotism. Trump and conservatives argue that historical sites focus too much on America's history of slavery, land theft, and discrimination, which he claims distorts history instead of emphasizing American exceptionalism. Critics say the order amounts to whitewashing history and mirrors similar efforts in states like Florida and Texas to reshape how American history is taught.

Trump team revokes $11 billion in funding for addiction, mental health care
State and county public health departments and nonprofit groups are reeling after the Trump administration announced abrupt cancellation and revocation of roughly $11.4 billion in COVID-era funding for grants linked to addiction, mental health and other programs.
"This is chopping things off in the middle while people are actually doing the work," said Keith Humphreys, an addiction policy researcher at Stanford University, who also volunteers doing harm reduction work with people in addiction. He warned the move could trigger layoffs and treatment disruptions. "Services will be dropped in the middle. Bang, the clinic is closing. It's a brutal way to make these cuts," Humphreys said.

Judge accuses Trump administration of trying to undermine judiciary
A federal judge on Thursday rejected the Justice Department's bid to remove her from a case challenging one of President Trump's executive orders, accusing the department of attacking her as part of broader campaign to try to undermine the judicial system.
The order from U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell, nominated to serve on the federal bench during the Obama administration, denies the department's effort to disqualify her from the lawsuit over Trump's order punishing the prominent law firm Perkins Coie. Earlier this month, Howell said the order likely violated the constitution and temporarily blocked enforcement of it.

U.S. sees large rise in border seizures of eggs, while fentanyl rate falls
With egg prices soaring due to the bird flu outbreak, border officials say they're catching more people attempting to bring eggs into the United States illegally. In fact, sharp increases in egg seizures are outpacing border officials' interceptions of deadly fentanyl.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said this week that seizures of raw eggs have risen by 48% at entry points along the northern and southern borders, compared to last year. CBP agents have been especially busy at some ports of entry: "The San Diego Field Office has seen a 158% increase in egg interceptions" since the last fiscal year ended in September, the agency said in late February.

Justice Sotomayor warns about `arbitrary power' as she defends the rule of law
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor emphasized the importance of an independent judiciary and the rule of law during a talk at Georgetown Law School. She warned against "arbitrary power," stating that unfairness at someoneβs whim could affect anyone. While she did not cite specific concerns, her remarks came as President Trump has called for impeaching a judge and targeting law firms that opposed him in court. Sotomayor stressed that maintaining societal standards is essential to upholding the rule of law, warning that losing common norms would erode it completely.
