Snowstorms close schools and offices across a large swath of the U.S.

Closures and states of emergency are being announced across the Central Plains, Midwest and East Coast regions of the U.S., as a snowstorm is expected to move across several states in those areas in coming days.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings in parts of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Six to 12 inches of snow are expected from Ohio to D.C by Monday morning. More than 240,000 customers were without power as of early Monday morning across West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri, according to Poweroutage. us.

FBI says suspect in New Orleans attack twice visited the city to conduct surveillance

The FBI has revealed that the man who allegedly carried out the New Year's Day attack in New Orleans had recently visited the city twice beforehand, and used "smart glasses" to record video of the area he later targeted.

In a press conference on Sunday, Lyonel Myrthil, the FBI special agent in charge of the New Orleans field office, said that Shamsud-Din Jabbar had traveled to New Orleans just weeks ahead of the attack that killed 14 people and injured many more. One trip took place in October, while the other was in November. Myrthil also said Jabbar had ridden through the city's French Quarter on a bicycle wearing smart glasses made by Ray-Ban that are capable of recording video and are connected to a user's Facebook account.

President Joe Biden is moving to ban new offshore oil and gas drilling in most U.S. coastal waters, a last-minute effort to block possible action by the incoming Trump administration to expand offshore drilling.

Biden, whose term expires in two weeks, said he is using authority under the federal Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to protect offshore areas along the East and West coasts, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and portions of Alaska's Northern Bering Sea from future oil and natural gas leasing.

First bird flu death reported in the U.S., according to the CDC

The U.S. has recorded its first death of a person infected with bird flu. The patient was a resident of southwest Louisiana who was hospitalized last month with the first known severe case of bird flu in the country. On Monday, the Louisiana Department of Health said the person had died from the illness but shared few other details because of patient privacy rules. The patient was over 65 and had underlying medical conditions.

The patient contracted the illness after being exposed to "a combination of a non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds," according to a news release. An "extensive public health investigation" did not turn up any other cases of H5N1 in a person or evidence of human-to-human spread.
