Starbucks baristas' 'strike before Christmas' has reached hundreds of U.S. stores

Starbucks' union says workers are walking off the job at hundreds of stores across dozens of cities on Tuesday, the last planned day of what it is calling "the strike before Christmas."

"Starbucks Baristas at over THREE HUNDRED stores have walked off the job to demand Starbucks bargain a fair contract from coast-to-coast," Starbucks Workers United (SBU) wrote in an Instagram post, touting it as the largest unfair labor practices strike in the coffee chain's history.

Former President Bill Clinton was discharged from a Washington hospital on Tuesday and will be home for Christmas after he was admitted the day before with a fever. Clinton is being treated for the flu, Angel Urena, Clinton's deputy chief of staff, said in a statement about his release.

"He and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and are touched by the kind messages and well wishes he received," Urena said.

'We are not California': New Jersey dealers push back on electric truck rules

As a handful of states start adopting California's sales mandates for zero-emission trucks, dealers in New Jersey are pushing back. These rules are designed to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles in heavy trucking. They require truck manufacturers to ensure at least 7% of their total sales are zero-emission in the states that are opting in to the regulations.

Currently, 10 other states have chosen to follow these Advanced Clean Truck rules, which are also known as ACT. But a push by dealers in New Jersey to delay implementation of the rules shows the battle lines over these mandates. There's no indication that the push will succeed; the rules are set to go into effect at the start of the new year, and New Jersey's governor has indicated support for the current timeline.

Bird flu has killed 20 big cats including cougars at a U.S. wildlife sanctuary

An animal sanctuary in Shelton, Wash., is under quarantine after a bird flu outbreak killed 20 big cats at the facility over the past month. The Wild Felid Advocacy Center of Washington called the deaths "heartbreaking," confirming the virus has claimed more than half its animals, including four cougars and a half-Bengal tiger, since late November.

The sanctuary said the outbreak may have been caused by respiratory secretions passed from infected birds to the cats or by contaminated meat fed to the cats. It said bird flu poses a serious risk to felines, often progressing from mild symptoms to fatal pneumonia within 24 hours.
