Millions face wintry weather for what could be a record-setting holiday travel season

Rain and snow showers have impacted the Pacific Northwest since Saturday, while in the Northeast and areas around the Great Lakes, cold air from the Arctic has sent temperatures plunging, according to the National Weather Service.

Travelers at several airports have already been experiencing delays heading into the holidays. On Friday, heavy fog caused hundreds of delays at San Diego International Airport, according to KPBS. Those flying in and out of Boston Logan International Airport have also seen delays because of ice and snow.

Biden commutes sentences of 37 federal death row prisoner

President Biden used his clemency authority Monday to commute the sentences of 37 of the 40 men on federal death row to life without parole, in one of the most significant moves taken against capital punishment in recent presidential history.

Biden did not commute the sentences of three men who were involved in cases of terrorism or hate-fueled mass murder, including Robert Bowers, convicted for the 2018 mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue; Dylann Roof, convicted for the 2015 mass shooting at a Black church in Charleston, S.C.; and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, convicted of the 2013 bombing at the Boston Marathon.

Santa Cruz Wharf Partially Collapses as Pacific Storm Pounds California's Coast

Two people had to be rescued when a portion of the Santa Cruz Wharf partially collapsed in the ocean on Monday afternoon as heavy surf and rains from a major Pacific storm pounded the coast. A third person, who also fell in the water, was able to swim to safety, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department. No additional injuries were reported.

About 150 feet of the end of the long pier fell into the water around 12:45 p.m., authorities said. The existing section of the wharf was immediately evacuated and will remain closed indefinitely, with all nearby traffic blocked to make room for emergency personnel.

Drug lord is deported to Colombia and walks free after 20 years in U.S. prisons

One of Colombia's legendary drug lords and a key operator of the Medellin cartel has been deported back to the South American country, after serving 25 years of a 30-year prison sentence in the United States. A short while later, Fabio Ochoa was again a free man.

Ochoa arrived in Bogota on a deportation flight on Monday afternoon, wearing a modest grey sweatshirt and carrying his personal belongings in a plastic bag. After stepping out of the plane, Ochoa was met by immigration officials in bullet proof vests. There were no police on site to detain him. Immigration officials took his fingerprints and confirmed through a database that Ochoa is not wanted by Colombian authorities. The country's immigration agency said on the social media platform X that Ochoa was "freed so that he could join his family."

Luigi Mangione pleads not guilty to murder charges in NYC killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO

The man accused of shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in a calculated killing outside a Midtown hotel pleaded not guilty to murder in furtherance of terrorism and other felony charges Monday.

Luigi Mangione, 26, was arraigned in a lower Manhattan courtroom after he was indicted on a host of state charges last week. The U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York has also charged him federally — the most serious of those charges is punishable by the death penalty.

Former President Bill Clinton was discharged from a Washington hospital on Tuesday and will be home for Christmas after he was admitted the day before with a fever. Clinton is being treated for the flu, Angel Urena, Clinton's deputy chief of staff, said in a statement about his release.

"He and his family are deeply grateful for the exceptional care provided by the team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and are touched by the kind messages and well wishes he received," Urena said.
