*Mavalli Bisilu Maramma Temple*
The Bisilu Maramma Temple in Mavalli, Bangalore, holds deep cultural and historical significance. Established during a time when the plague epidemic devastated the region.
The temple was one of four Maramma shrines built in each corner of the village, believed to protect the people from the disease.Although the village has now become a part of the city, the shrines housing the four goddesses continue to exist and to be worshipped.”
The name "Bisilu," meaning "sunshine" in Kannada, is symbolic. Interestingly, sunlight, known to inhibit *Yersinia pestis*, the plague-causing bacterium, plays an essential role in the temple's design—its sacred stones are purposefully left under the open sky to ensure they receive direct sunlight.
Legend has it that Chamundeshwari, the goddess from Mysore, once traveled through Mavalli, a village surrounded by a mango forest at the time. She sought shelter there, promising to protect the land if allowed to reside. The villagers agreed, and to this day, she resides at the Bisilu Maramma temple. She is revered as Bisilu or Veyil (sunlight) Maramma, as she preferred to remain in the open under sunlight rather than an enclosed space.
A grand festival called *Ooru Habba* is celebrated every three years, drawing over 100,000 people to the temple. This event attracts both locals and former residents, who gather to invoke the blessings of the deity, Mariamma, and honor the cultural heritage of Mavalli.
The Ooru Habba festival's dates are decided through a traditional meeting among priests from the four Maramma temples in Mavalli, typically held after the Ugadi festival. Once the dates are determined, the priests announce them across the village, walking from street to street with sticks in hand, much like town criers of the past. This ritual invites the community to participate and maintains a sense of tradition and unity.
Originally, the festival united over 11 villages in the surrounding area. However, as time went on, six of these villages started holding their own festivals. Today, the villages of Dodda Mavalli, Chikka Mavalli, Dandepalya, Sathyammanavattara, and Chinappapalya continue the age-old custom of celebrating the Ooru Habba, preserving this rich cultural tradition in the heart of Bangalore.

*Sri Kalabhairava Temple- Sringeri*
Sri Kalabhairava temple located in Narasimha Vana at Sringeri in Karnataka is the guardian deity of Sringeri consecrated in the eastern direction by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya. The 33rd Acharya of the Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Sacchidananda Shivabhinava Nrisimha Bharati Mahaswamiji has composed a Kalabhairava-ashtakam on this deity.
This is a small shrine with a garbhagriha, an antarala and an open canopy which was constructed in the recent times. It has a gopuram and a shikara.
The Kalabhairava idol is a small idol with a prabhavali. He is holding a khadga (sword), damaru, trishula and a munda(human head) in his four hands and wears sandals and anklets. The dog his vahana (mount) is behind. The flowery garland etched in stone is very beautiful.
The divine vahana(mount) of Kalabhairava is a dog, the idol is seen behind the main idol and is believed to have motivational powers.
Kala Bhairava represents the passage of time. Bhairava, or Kala Bhairava, is the fierce form of Lord Shiva and the destroyer of Time itself (Maha Kala). He watches over the mysterious flow of time, not just for human life, but also for nations and planets, ensuring that all things are temporary and will eventually pass away.
Kala Bhairava is one of the eight fierce forms of Lord Shiva, known as the Bhairavas. These eight forms are believed to protect the eight directions and the home of Lord Shiva. The eight Bhairavas are: Kala Bhairava, Asitanga Bhairava, Samhara Bhairava, Ruru Bhairava, Krodha Bhairava, Kapala Bhairava, Rudra Bhairava, and Unmatta Bhairava.
Kala Bhairava is worshipped as *Kshetrapala*, the guardian of the temple. After closing the temple doors, the keys are placed at his feet as a ritual, and they are taken back in the morning with his permission to reopen the temple.
He is also considered the protector of pilgrims and travelers. Praying to Kala Bhairava before starting a journey is believed to help ensure safe travels.
Kala Bhairava not only protects sacred places but is also regarded as a deity of liberation. Worshipping Shiva as Kala Bhairava helps people understand the temporary nature of worldly life, encouraging them to use their human birth to seek Brahman, the supreme reality.
Kala Bhairava is also the ruling deity of the planet Rahu, which has a strong influence on people. Worshiping Kala Bhairava, especially by chanting the *Kala Bhairavashtakam*, is said to reduce the negative effects of Rahu.
Here at Sringeri devotees offer vadesara, abhisheka and even silver anklets to Kalabhairava on ashtami tithi.
*Festival*
Kala Bhairava Ashtami is celebrated every year during the Krishna Paksha Ashtami (eighth day of the waning moon) in the month of Margashira.
In Sringeri, a special abhisheka and puja are performed by His Holiness at the Kala Bhairava temple in the morning. This is followed by a grand *Deepotsava* (festival of lights) in the evening, which is celebrated with great devotion on the evening of Kala Bhairava Ashtami.

*Sri Krishnendra Guru Swamy temple at Old Hubli-Hubli*
Today is Sri Krishnendra Guruji's 169th Aradhana Mahotsava
*Il ಶ್ರೀ ದಯಾಸಾಗರಾ ಯೋಗಿವರಾ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣೇಂದ್ರ ದಿಗಂಬರಾ ll*
Krishnendra Guru was born towards the end of Eighteenth Century (18th Century) in Ananthapura district of Madras- Karnataka. He was born in the family of Rajapurohit and his Poorvashram name was "Ananth".
He was drawn towards vedadhyayana from a very early age. He chose Kumbakonam for his vedhadhyana and was known as Anantha Shastry.
He left Kumbakonam in search of a sadguru and reached Kashi kshetra. His companion was Marthanda Dikshitha, father of Chidambara Dikshitha, presumed to be an avathar of Shri. Chidambareshwara of Gurlahosuru. Shri.Siddeshwara Maharaja who left his worldly body at Karaveerapura after gaining popularity in Kolhapura princely state was also his companion. All the three were in search of a guru. They prostrated before Shri.Swayamprakasha, a thaponishtha yati of Kashi,it is believed a magnet will attract iron and not stone. Here, the Guru estimated the caliber of these three shishyas through his divyadrishthi. He turned these shishyas into experts in vedas through sadupadesha. The guru had to undergo some torture because of janmanthara karma. It was destined that these three shishyas were to be tested for their devotion. The yathi invoked some disease using his tapobala. His body was covered with wounds, puss and blood and emanated foul smell.
All his disciples except these three abandoned the gurukula. These three never turned their backs but continued to nurse the Guru. Finally, the guru recovered and blessed them.
Shri. Swayamprakasha yati gave Sanyasa deeksha only to Anantha Shastry and gave him the name as Krishnendra. He was asked to travel towards South India by Shri. Swayamprakasha yati and after travelling several places Sri.Krishnendra Guru reached Hubballi and settled here.
Krishnendra Guru went on a pilgrimage and conducted Gayathri Punascharana. He brought people into the righteous path by discourses and showed his mahima in Karnataka.
His disciples were Sri.Narasimha Bhatt Agnihotri,Sri Ganesh Pant Sahasrabuddhe, Sri.Padaki Baavu Rao, Narasobawadi temple priest Sri.Appanna Bhattaru and Sri.Trivikrama Shastry.
Later, realizing that the end is not far off, he came to Hubballi and started Gayathri Punascharana under a dry oudumbara vriksha. Soon, the dry tree sprang to life. After some time, the Guruji attained Samadhi under the same tree. Soon after, the tree also withered away.
Since then, the Guruji though invisible to the eyes, stands personified to the eyes of the devotees. The place is still awake and alive. There are several people who have got rid of their diseases and evil spirits by a single darshana. He is there to fulfill the desires of devotees. Daily poojas and deeparadhane are being held for the past several years. Every year, aradhana is held on 13th and 14th days of Kartheeka shuddha. In this connection, Mukthadwara Annasantharpane is also arranged. And the number of devotees is increasing year by year.

Worshipping Rama as a King, Orchha (Madhya Pradesh) - (460 kms from Delhi)
A medieval fort on the Betwa River, Orchha came into being at the beginning of the 16th century CE, when the Bundela dynasty moved its capital here. Over centuries, the place saw structures soar and legends around them taken even higher.
The biggest story here links the towering Chaturbhuj Temple with the Ram Raja shrine. Apparently, a queen of Orchha wanted to build a Ram Temple here. A magnificent idol of Rama was brought from Ayodhya and while the Chaturbhuj Temple was being built, it was temporarily housed in the queen’s palace. However, when the time came to take the idol to the main shrine, it could not be moved. Consequently, the palace itself became a temple causing Rama to be worshipped as a king here. The cathedral-like Chaturbhuj stands empty in an eternal wait.
