*Shri Venkatramana Temple-Kallianpur*

Shri Venkatramana Temple in Kalyanpura (Kallianpura) near Udupi is one of the important temples of the GSB community in Dakshina Kannada region with a strong kulavi base of local GSB families. Located on the banks of the river Swarna, this temple has a very rich history dating back to 500 years. Sri Venkatramana placed in-between Sridevi and Bhudevi is worshipped by many families who are associated with Kallianpur.

The Simhasana of the Sanctum Sanctorum in the temple has three sections: The upper section contains the main deity of Shri Venkataramana along with Sridevi and Bhudevi. The middle section also consists of Shri Venkataramana along with Sridevi and Bhudevi. The lower section consists of the Utsav Murthy of Shri Gopalakrishna which is generally taken out for Pete(town) utsav and other celebrations.
Lord Hanuman, Lord Ganapathi, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Garuda and the three ganas namely Ksethra Pala, Agni-bhairav and Drishti gana complete the temple.

There is a very interesting story on how the utsav murthy was found. It so happened that one merchant, Anant Baliga while crossing the nearby river Swarna on a boat, realized that the boat would not move forward and kept circling at a certain spot in the river. Puzzled, the boatman deep-dived into the water and found a 10-inch tall panchaloha (an alloy of 5 metals usually gold, silver, copper, zinc and iron) idol of Gopalakrishna. This was then duly installed in the temple as utsav murthy - an idol that is taken around in temple processions.

The temple witnessed the first Kanakabhiskha event in 1958 in the divine presence of HH Sri Sudhindra Teertha Swamiji.

This temple was renovated twice and recently in 1990. "Karthika masa depostsava" in the month of November, "Kanakabhisheka" in the month of January, "Varamahalaxmi Vrita" in the month of August, "Chandika Homa" in the month of September are the main religious functions being held here.

*History*

Few hundred years back, Kabbinale Village, didn't have any temple, and the village elders thought of building a temple for Lord Krishna. Now as the families had migrated from a place called Sulkod or Suligod near Kollur, after some family feud, so the male members, of the migrated families had a plan, they raided their old village temple at Sulikod/Suligod, and brought the same Idol of Lord Sri Gopalkrishna to Kabbinale, in the night and when the villagers of Sulkod/Suligod, came to know of this it was already morning.

They came to Kabbinale in search of the Idol, there was a big fight among each other, but the people of Sulkod/Suligod, could never find the idol, and the settleres of Kabbinale always maintained that they had not stolen the idol. The Idol was kept hidden inside a Pond, as nobody could find it.

The idol remained there for several years, and then it was removed from the pond and installed in the temple. During all this tussel for the Idol, the Flute of the Idol broke, therefore even today one can find a silver flute in the Black Granite Idol, of Lord Sri Gopalkrishna.

*Legend*

Sage Pundarika was advised by Sage Kanwa to do penance to Lord Shiva for seeking salvation. Shiva gave a darshan and embraced the sage and granted salvation. Usually the soul merges with the divine but as the Lord embraced (Aarohanam) Sage Pundarika along with his body (Tamil: Kayam), Shiva is called Kaya (body) Aarohana (embrace) Easwarar - Lord Kayaroganeswarar.

Another legend says that the King of Serpents prayed to Shiva and was blessed with a girl child. She was born with three breasts and the serpent king was greatly upset. Shiva assured the king that one breast would disappear when a king from the Surya dynasty visited him. King Shalisuhan came to this place, the third breast vanished. The Naga king in delight gave his daughter to Shalisuhan in marriage. As the Naga king worshipped here, the place came to be known as Nagai Karonam that later became Nagapattinam.

Generally, temples are closed if a death occurs in a nearby place. In this place, the garlands and the clothes – vastras used for the Lord is placed on corpse. A fisherman, Adhipathar attained salvation with the grace of Lord Shiva in this place. Remembering this event, as a mark of respect to the community, this practice is followed in this temple. The body is placed before the temple without closing the doors. The garland and the vastras used for the Lord are placed on the body.

Vaikasi Wedding festival in May-June; Aadi Pooram in July-August; Shivrathri in February-March; Aipasi Annabishekam in October-November and Tirukarthikai in November-December are the festivals celebrated in the temple.
The event of Sage Pundarika entering the shrine of Lord Shiva and merging with him is celebrated during the Arthajama Puja (last puja of the day) in Aani (June-July) on the day when the star Ayilyam rules the skies.
