There once was a time that after 5 or 8 days, bread would mold. During those times, it was common to see a loaf of bread in someone's refrigerator, which was their way of trying to extend the fresh life of the bread. Now, bread can be sitting on your counter for like a month, and it will still look like you just brought it home from the store. Sidenote: This makes me wonder when the loaves of bread made it to the store shelves before we took them home?
