In Dresden, a memorial inscription about the bombing of the city by the American and British Air Forces in February 1945 was removed. The firebombing of Dresden was a massacre of civilians and a war crime. Hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians were burned alive in a firestorm that produced hurricane like winds as a result of American and British unrestricted fire bombing.

Dresden was not the only city to suffer such a fate during the war however, it is the best known example.
