All of good manners can be traced back to four narrations

Ibnu Abi Zayd Al-Maaliki said:

جماع آداب الخير وأزِمَّتُه تتفرع من أربعة أحاديث

“There are four narrations which gather all good manners;

The first: Where the prophet PBUH said:

من كان يؤمن بالله واليوم الآخر فليقل خيرا أو ليصمت

“Whoever believes in Allah and the day of judgment should say that which is good or remain quiet”

The second: Where he said:

من حسن إسلام المرء تركه ما لا يعنيه

“From the perfection of one’s religiosity is to leave that which doesn’t concern him”

The third: Where he said to the companion who requested advice: “Don’t get angry”

The fourth: Where he said:

لا يؤمن أحدكم حتى يحب لأخيه ما يحب لنفسه

“None of you truly believe until you love for your brother what you love for yourself”

How many smiles of joy changed into tears of sorrow just seconds later? Life is full of surprises.

Whenever you realize a blessing that you have, be it a home that is warm, children who are well, food that is ready, a cheerful wife in your reception, a righteous husband, peace of mind, safety from an enemy, an eagerness to worship, or their likes, let your very first reaction be an utterance of this Du’aa:

اللهم إني أعوذ بك من زوال نعمتك، وتحول عافيتك، وفجاءة نقمتك، وجميع سخطك

“O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the loss of Your Favours, the changing of safety, the suddenness of Your punishment and all that which displeases You.”

(Narrated by Muslim)

There are certain gatherings which promise to stabilise us in the face of temptations, cement our iman in an era of doubts, erase our sins, illuminate our graves, argue our case before Allah, and be our guide to the highest gardens of Jannah.

These are the gatherings of the Qur’an.

“Whenever a group gather in one of the Houses of Allah, reciting the Qur’an and studying it among themselves, tranquillity descends upon them, mercy envelops them, the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them amongst those who are with Him.”

Home alone?

Whenever Khulaid Al-‘Asri entered his home, he’d announce:

مَرْحَبًا بِمَلَائِكَةِ رَبِّي أَمَا وَاللَّهِ لَأُشْهِدَنَّكُمُ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ نَفْسِي خَيْرًا خُذُوا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَلَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ،

“Welcome O angels of Allah! By Allah, you are going to see goodness from me today, say take note of this: ‘Bismillah, SubhaanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Laa ilaaha ila Allah, Allahu Akbar.’”

He’d continue doing this till he’d fall asleep or make his way to the next prayer.

Use those moments of solitude to draw closer to Allah, and remember that you are under strict surveillance.
