Issue Summary: ANGEL One SmartAPI Order Modification Failure (Today’s Incident)
Today, we encountered a major issue with ANGEL One’s SmartAPI — specifically with their modify endpoint, which is used to modify existing orders (like converting a stop loss limit (SLL) order to a market order). This led to widespread problems for our users who rely on order modification for TSLs, square-offs, and other critical functionalities.
What Was Affected?
• All modification requests failed — this includes price, quantity, and order type (e.g., Limit to Market).
• Trailing Stop Losses (TSL) did not work since they rely on modifying existing orders.
• Square-offs that convert stop loss orders into market orders also failed.
• This was not an issue with placing fresh market orders — those worked fine.
Why Does This Matter?
Our platform, by design, modifies existing stop loss orders to square off positions — we don’t cancel and re-place orders because doing so can cause:
• Duplicate orders
• Execution risks (like slippage or missed exits)
• Non-deterministic behavior
The modify endpoint is integral to this design. When it fails, all the above features break.
What Did We Do?
• We escalated the issue to ANGEL One immediately.
• We shared user logs and evidence to help diagnose the problem.
• We tried multiple lines of communication — WhatsApp, phone calls — to the SmartAPI team and even senior contacts we’ve dealt with before.
• Unfortunately, we received no concrete response. Only repeated instructions to “email the SmartAPI team” at smartapi@angelbroking.com.
There has been a complete communication blackout from their end.
Our Suggested Solutions Going Forward:
1. Use Market Orders (for entry and exit) only when trading via ANGEL until this issue is resolved.
(Note: You will lose some control and flexibility, but it’s currently the only workaround.)
2. Switch to 5Paisa, a broker we’ve just partnered with (Link: https://bit.ly/5paisa-algotest):
• Their team has personally assured full support for AlgoTest users.
• They are committed to fast onboarding and real-time communication during any technical issues.
• Their API is just as stable as ANGEL’s — with the key difference being support responsiveness and transparency.
Past Precedents with ANGEL One:
This isn’t the first time. In December 2024, they introduced a silent API change that broke order flow. Again, it took a long email chain to get acknowledgment and resolution. There was no proactive communication from their side.
Important Note for Users:
ANGEL One’s regular customer support is not trained or aware of SmartAPI-related issues. If you contact them, they will likely say “everything is fine” — it isn’t. Only the SmartAPI team handles these issues, and they can only be reached via email smartapi@angelbroking.com.
To Recap:
• This is a SmartAPI bug with the modify endpoint.
• We have communicated extensively with ANGEL — no response so far.
• You can either:
• Switch to market orders on ANGEL temporarily, or
• Move to 5paisa, where support is better https://bit.ly/5paisa-algotest.
Important: We do not recommend any broker and you can go ahead with any of the 40+ brokers integrated.
We’ll continue to monitor the situation and update you as soon as we get a resolution from ANGEL One.

Modify end point of Angel One's API which was broken earlier now seems to be working , but we have not received an official confirmation from Angel One Team. Please stay cautious.

Kudos to a couple of users who were able to get a reply from AngelOne on what the issue was. We have ha tried to get the same from their team and they had not replied to any of our messages.
Coming to the solution, we have tested the fix and it should be working from today.
Now, the problem, as it was highlighted the modify requests were continuously failing. Our integration logic hasn't changed in the past 3 years and the same payload used to work before but it had stopped working for a couple of days now. Certainly, the API team made this key as a required parameter at some point of time, which wasn't the case before.
Nonetheless, we tried going over our request structure again and again and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Even the API response, we got had a status code of 200(which means it's a success), but the response content would be:

Going over the documentation, it says AB2001 implies "Internal Error, Please try after sometime". And we definitely retried quite a few times.
The standard protocol of such validation errors are that the response code should be 400 and the description should say which required fields are missing which if we had we would have fixed the problem a long time ago. Not only the error description was insufficient to decode the issue, it was rather misleading that there's an intermittent problem with modify endpoint and hence you're getting internal error so retry after sometime.
Now that we have the problem identified, we have revisited the entire integration and tested it thoroughly. You shouldn't be facing this issue anymore.
My sincere apologies, if you feel that this was a lapse on our part, but I can assure you the entire team has been on this case for the past few days and we strive to tackle all such issues with any of the 40+ brokers we are integrated with.

🚀 New Feature Alert: Broker Level SL/Target Now Available!
We’ve added Broker Level Stop Loss and Target to both AlgoTrade New Version and Signals, but please note that the functionality differs slightly between the two as per user requests.
🔹 For AlgoTrade New Version:
-Set SL/Target across all active or squared-off strategies for the day.
-Broker-level SL/Target can be set at any point during the day and will consider the P&L of all running and squared-off strategies for that broker.
🔹 For Signals :
-Set broker-level SL/Target from the Signals Execution page.
-Once hit, all signals for the day are blocked for that broker.
-To allow further trades after a broker-level SL/Target is hit, you must manually reset it from the Signals Execution page.
⚠️ Note:
-Broker-level settings must be set daily and apply only to strategies deployed via AlgoTest, not manual trades.
-Strategies in a paused state or switched to manual mode are excluded from MTM calculations.
-For strategies that go into an error state, only the closed leg MTM will be considered in broker-level calculations.
