๐ฉบโ๏ธ PILOT MEDICAL EXAMINATION โ ARE YOU FIT TO FLY?
Here are some of the key medical assessments:
๐๏ธ 1. Eyesight Examination (One of the Most Important Tests)
Your vision is carefully evaluated to ensure you can safely operate an aircraft.
The examination may include:
โ Distance vision โ Can you clearly see objects far away?
โ Near vision โ Can you read instruments and cockpit displays?
โ Color vision โ Ability to distinguish colors such as red, green, and white, which are essential for aviation signals and lights.
โ Depth perception โ Helps judge distance accurately during takeoff and landing.
โ Peripheral vision โ Measures how well you see to the sides.
โ Eye coordination โ Checks if both eyes work together properly.
โ Screening for short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia), and other eye conditions.
๐ 2. Hearing Test (Audiometry)
Ensures you can clearly hear radio communications, alarms, and cockpit instructions.
๐ฉป 3. Chest X-ray
Used to check the health of your lungs and identify certain medical conditions.
๐ฉธ 4. Blood Tests
May be performed to screen for infections, blood disorders, blood sugar levels, and overall health.
๐ป 5. Urine Test
Checks kidney function and looks for signs of diabetes, infection, or other health concerns.
โ๏ธ 6. Height, Weight & Body Mass Index (BMI)
Your physical condition is assessed to ensure you meet medical fitness standards.
โค๏ธ 7. Cardiovascular Examination
Your blood pressure, heart rate, and sometimes an ECG are checked to confirm your heart is healthy enough for flight duties.
๐ซ 8. General Physical Examination
Aviation medical examiners assess your overall health, including your nervous system, joints, muscles, and general physical fitness.
๐ซ Remember: Passing the written exam and interview is only part of the journey. Your medical fitness is equally important. Taking care of your eyes, ears, fitness, and overall health today can help prepare you for tomorrow's flight deck.

โ๏ธ An airplane flies by using the principle of lift, which is generated by the wings. Here's a simplified explanation:
Lift Generation:
1. Air flows over and under the curved wing surface
2. The shape of the wing deflects air downward, creating a pressure difference.
3. Lower pressure above the wing and higher pressure below create an upward force (lift)
Four Forces of Flight:
1. Lift (upward)
2. Weight (downward)
3. Thrust (forward)
4. Drag (backward)
Wing Design:
1. Cambered surface: Curved upper surface, flat lower surface
2. Angle of attack: Wing tilted slightly upward.
3. Airfoil shape: Wing's cross-sectional shape.
Lift Coefficient (CL):
1. Measure of lift produced by a wing.
2. Depends on wing shape, angle of attack, and air density.
Types of Lift:
1. Static lift: Wing generates lift at zero airspeed.
2. Dynamic lift: Wing generates lift due to airflow.
Flight Regimes:
1. Takeoff: High lift, low speed.
2. Cruise: Balanced lift and weight.
3. Landing: High lift, low speed.

โ๏ธ 6 COCKPIT INSTRUMENTS THAT CAN HELP YOU DURING A PILOT SIMULATION EXAM
If you're preparing for a pilot simulation test, understanding these six basic cockpit instruments is essential. They are often called the "Six Pack" because they provide the pilot with the most important flight information.
๐ซ 1. Airspeed Indicator (ASI)
Shows how fast the aircraft is moving through the air. Maintaining the correct speed is critical during takeoff, climb, approach, and landing.
๐ 2. Attitude Indicator (Artificial Horizon)
Displays the aircraft's position relative to the horizonโwhether the nose is up or down and if the aircraft is banking left or right. It is one of the most important instruments for controlling the aircraft.
โฑ๏ธ 3. Altimeter
Measures the aircraft's altitude above sea level. Pilots use it to maintain assigned flight levels and ensure safe terrain clearance.
๐งญ 4. Turn Coordinator
Shows the rate and direction of the aircraft's turn while helping the pilot keep the turn coordinated. It prevents unbalanced turns that can affect aircraft control.
๐งญ 5. Heading Indicator (Directional Gyro)
Displays the aircraft's current heading. It helps pilots maintain the correct direction and follow ATC instructions accurately.
โฌ๏ธโฌ๏ธ 6. Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI)
Indicates how fast the aircraft is climbing or descending, usually in feet per minute. It helps pilots maintain smooth climbs and descents.
๐ก Simulation Exam Tip:
Don't just memorize the names of these instruments. Learn what information each one provides and when to use it. A good simulator assessment evaluates how well you interpret the instruments not just whether you recognize them.
๐ซ A great pilot doesn't fly by instinct alone. They fly by understanding what the instruments are telling them.

๐ซ ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES TRAINEE PILOT โ SIMULATOR (FTD) ASSESSMENT โ๏ธ
After successfully passing the written exam and competency-based interview, shortlisted candidates are invited for the Simulator (FTD) Assessment, which is an official step in the Ethiopian Airlines trainee pilot selection process.
๐ฎ What is the Simulator Test?
The simulator is not designed to test your flying experience. Instead, it evaluates your natural aptitude and potential to become a pilot.
During the assessment, examiners may evaluate:
๐ฉ๏ธ Handโeye coordination
๐ง Ability to follow instructions accurately
๐ Situational awareness
โก Reaction time and decision-making
๐ฏ Ability to remain calm under pressure
๐ก Instrument scanning and basic aircraft control
๐ฃ๏ธ Communication and discipline
๐ก How to Prepare
โ Learn the basic six cockpit instruments and what they indicate.
โ Watch beginner flight simulator videos to become familiar with cockpit controls and instrument scanning.
โ Listen carefully to every instruction accuracy is more important than speed.
โ Stay calm. A small mistake is not the end of the assessment.
โ Focus on one task at a time and avoid unnecessary distractions.
โ ๏ธ Remember: The simulator assessment is not looking for experienced pilots. Ethiopian Airlines is looking for candidates with the potential, discipline, and aptitude to become professional pilots through training.
๐ซ A calm mind, quick learning ability, and disciplined attitude will take you farther than trying to act like an experienced pilot.
