Here’s something interesting takeoff is actually one of the most critical moments in a flight. In just a few seconds, pilots make important decisions that determine the safety of the entire journey. That’s why training and focus matter so much.
And one more communication is everything in aviation. Pilots, air traffic controllers, and crew all speak in clear, standardized language to avoid confusion. One small mistake in communication can matter, so precision is key.

Aviation Terminology #1: Sixth Freedom Traffic ✈️

Sixth Freedom Traffic refers to an airline's right to transport passengers between two foreign countries via its home country. For example, when a passenger flies with Ethiopian Airlines from New York (JFK) to Nairobi (NBO) via Addis Ababa (ADD), they are utilizing the Sixth Freedom of the Air.

Why It Matters:

Ethiopian Airlines capitalizes on this freedom to establish Addis Ababa as a global hub, connecting various continents. This strategy not only increases passenger traffic but also enhances revenue, positioning Ethiopian Airlines as a leading global carrier in Africa.

Just an aviation tidbit

In 1958, pilots Robert Timm and John Cook took off from Las Vegas in a modified Cessna 172. They broke the record staying airborne for 64 days, 22 hours, and 19 minutes.

How did they do it?
Since they couldn't land, they had to solve three major problems while flying:

Refueling: They didn't use mid-air refueling from another plane. Instead, a truck was driving down a straight stretch of desert highway at high speed, and the pilots were flying just a few feet above it to hook a hose and winch up fuel. They did this 128 times.

Maintenance: They modified the engine so they could change the oil and filters while the engine was still running. They even had a special platform outside the door so a pilot could step out (while flying!) to check the plane or clean the windshield.

Living: Most of the interior was stripped out to fit a small mattress. They took turns flying in 4-hour shifts. Food was prepared by the Hacienda Hotel's chefs, chopped up, and sent up in thermoses during refueling runs.

The Aftermath
By the end of the two months, the pilots were delirious from sleep deprivation and the constant drone of the engine. At one point, Timm actually fell asleep at the controls for over an hour, and the plane flew itself on a rudimentary autopilot until he woke up.

When they finally landed on February 7, 1959, they had flown over 150,000 miles (the equivalent of six times around the Earth).

ALTERNATE
It is a specific place (aerodrome) where you intend to land if your destination becomes unavailable (due to weather, a blocked runway, or an emergency). 
We pronounce it like   [ˈɔːltənet]


Due to low visibility, we are diverting to our alternate.

Never say "alternative airport" on the frequency. It's always Alternate.

ALTERNATIVE
It means a different option/method. It’s about a different way of doing things, not necessarily a physical location.

For example: alternative procedure (иная процедура).
