๐Ÿ”งโœˆ๏ธ AMT TIP - GET USED TO READING TECHNICAL DRAWINGS

If you're preparing for an AMT career, don't focus only on physics, mathematics and mechanical reasoning.

Start becoming comfortable with technical drawings and diagrams.

You may see:

๐Ÿ“ Dimensions
๐Ÿ”ฉ Component locations
โ†”๏ธ Measurements
๐Ÿ”ง Assembly details
๐Ÿ“‹ Symbols and technical information

๐Ÿ’ก Why is this useful?

Aircraft maintenance involves working with technical information, and a drawing can communicate details that words alone cannot.

๐ŸŽฏ WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW:

Find basic mechanical drawings online and practice identifying dimensions, symbols, parts and their positions.

You don't need to become an expert now.

Just build the habit of looking at a technical drawing and asking:

โ€œWhat is this showing me?โ€

That mindset will help you when the technical work gets more advanced. ๐Ÿ”งโœˆ๏ธ

โœˆ๏ธ HOW MANY PHASES ARE THERE IN A FLIGHT?

A flight isn't simply takeoff โ†’ cruise โ†’ landing. Aviation can divide a flight into several phases, depending on the purpose and system being used.

๐Ÿ›ซ 1. Pre-flight / Ground - Aircraft preparation and checks
๐Ÿš• 2. Taxi - Moving from the stand toward the runway
๐Ÿ›ซ 3. Takeoff - Aircraft accelerates and leaves the runway
โฌ†๏ธ 4. Initial Climb - Climbing after takeoff
โฌ†๏ธ 5. Climb - Continuing toward cruising altitude
โœˆ๏ธ 6. Cruise - Main portion of the flight
โฌ‡๏ธ 7. Descent - Leaving cruise altitude
๐ŸŽฏ 8. Approach - Setting up for landing
๐Ÿ›ฌ 9. Landing - Touchdown and deceleration
๐Ÿš• 10. Taxi-in / Shutdown - Moving to the stand and preparing the aircraft after the flight

๐Ÿ”ง AMT TIP:
Different flight phases place different demands on aircraft systems. Understanding these phases helps future AMTs connect aircraft operation with maintenance and system behavior.

โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ” DID YOU KNOW? โ€” WHY ARE AIRCRAFT WINDOWS SO SMALL?
Have you ever wondered why aircraft windows aren't much bigger? ๐Ÿ‘€
It's not simply about giving passengers a better view.
Every window creates an opening in the pressurized fuselage, which interrupts the aircraft's structure. Larger openings generally require more structural reinforcement around them.
๐Ÿ”ง Bigger windows = more reinforcement = more structural weight.
Aircraft designers therefore have to balance:
๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Passenger visibility

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Structural strength

โš–๏ธ Aircraft weight

๐Ÿ’จ Cabin pressurization
That's also why aircraft windows have rounded corners rather than sharp corners. Rounded shapes help reduce stress concentrations around the opening.
๐Ÿ’ก AMT TIP:

For an AMT, even something that looks as simple as a passenger window involves structure, materials, pressurization and safety.
In aviation, small design details can have a BIG engineering reason behind them. โœˆ๏ธ

๐Ÿ”งโœˆ๏ธ AMT STRUCTURE โ€” A SMALL CRACK CAN BE A BIG DEAL

If you're interested in Aircraft Structure, one thing you should understand early is that structural maintenance isn't simply about fixing visible damage.

An aircraft structure must carry loads safely throughout its operation.

๐Ÿ” A structural technician may need to look for:

โ€ข Cracks
โ€ข Corrosion
โ€ข Dents and deformation
โ€ข Damaged fasteners
โ€ข Composite damage
โ€ข Signs of fatigue

๐Ÿ’ก REAL EXAMPLE:

Imagine a small crack is found around a fastener hole on an aircraft structure.

An AMT can't simply say, โ€œIt's small, so it's safe.โ€

They need to determine the location, size, type and allowable limits of the damage using approved maintenance data before deciding what action is required.

๐ŸŽฏ FOR STRUCTURE APPLICANTS:

Build your foundation in:

โš™๏ธ Forces & stress
๐Ÿ”ฉ Materials & fasteners
๐Ÿ“ Technical drawings
๐Ÿงช Corrosion
๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Basic structural repair principles

In aircraft structure, small details can carry enormous responsibility.

Ethiopian Airlines has officially ordered eight 777-8 Freighters, becoming the first African airline to order the newest member of the 777X family.

The confirmed order marks a major step in the airlineโ€™s long-term cargo expansion. The 777-8F will join Ethiopianโ€™s established Boeing freighter fleet and support its growing network across Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America.

Built for demanding long-haul cargo operations, the 777-8F can carry up to 118 tonnes of structural payload, combining high capacity with long-range capability and improved fuel efficiency. It also retains important commonality with the 777 Freighter, including the ability to accommodate large outsize cargo.

Ethiopian Airlines currently operates 12 Boeing 777 Freighters, and these eight new 777-8Fs will bring the airlineโ€™s next-generation 777X technology into its cargo operation.

Eight 777-8Fs. One major milestone for Ethiopian Airlines and a new chapter for the 777X in Africa. ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡นโœˆ๏ธ

โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡น CABIN CREW TIP โ€” LEARN TO THINK IN โ€œPASSENGER + AIRCRAFTโ€

Hereโ€™s a tip many applicants overlook:

When you practice cabin-crew situations, don't think only about what the passenger wants.

Train yourself to notice what is happening around the aircraft too.

For example, a passenger asks you for something while:

๐ŸŒช๏ธ The aircraft is experiencing turbulence
๐Ÿšจ An important announcement is being made
๐Ÿ›ซ The aircraft is preparing for takeoff
๐Ÿ›ฌ The aircraft is approaching for landing
๐Ÿ”” The seat-belt sign is illuminated

The correct response can change depending on the flight situation.

๐ŸŽฏ REAL TIP FOR APPLICANTS:

When practicing interview or cabin-crew scenarios, ask yourself three questions:

1. What does the passenger need?
2. What is happening on the aircraft right now?
3. What is the safest and most professional action?

Airport Runways - Lengths and Strengths

Runways are at the core of an airportโ€™s infrastructure. Along with the terminal building, the runway, taxiways (how aircraft get from the runway to the apron area) and the apron areas (where aircraft park to embark/disembark passengers and cargo) are the most essential pieces of the airportโ€™s DNA.

This long piece of specially-designed pavement is also one of the most expensive parts of an airport to construct and maintain. In our second blog on Wanaka Airport, we look at why runways are important including their length and strength. As part of the Wanaka Airport Master Plan we will be looking at the airspace possibilities, weather and wind patterns, and then possible runway positions and lengths.

Runway lengths vary, depending on the aircraft size and runway elevation.

๐Ÿ”งโœˆ๏ธ AMT TIP โ€” DONโ€™T IGNORE THE โ€œWHYโ€ BEHIND A FAULT

When practicing AMT questions, don't train yourself to only identify what is wrong.

Train yourself to ask:

โ€œWhat could have caused it?โ€

For example, imagine an aircraft component is repeatedly showing an abnormal reading.

A beginner might think:

โŒ โ€œThe component is bad. Replace it.โ€

But an AMT needs to think deeper:

๐Ÿ”น Is the component actually faulty?
๐Ÿ”น Could the wiring or connection be the problem?
๐Ÿ”น Is the sensor receiving the correct power?
๐Ÿ”น Could another system be causing the indication?
๐Ÿ”น What does the approved troubleshooting procedure say?

๐ŸŽฏ REAL TIP FOR AMT APPLICANTS:

Whenever you study a mechanical, electrical or physics problem, don't stop after finding the answer.

Ask yourself:

โ€œWhat caused this result?โ€

That habit develops troubleshooting thinking one of the most useful skills you can build before entering aircraft maintenance training.

Don't just find the fault. Learn to understand the fault. ๐Ÿ”งโœˆ๏ธ

โœˆ๏ธ NOT EVERY TAKEOFF MAKES NOISE.

Some takeoffs happen quietly.

No runway.
No engines roaring.
No passengers watching through a window.

Just you, sitting somewhere, studying when nobody is checking.

Learning something you didn't understand yesterday.
Getting a question wrong.
Trying again.
Reading one more page when your mind says, โ€œenough.โ€

That doesn't look impressive from the outside.

But aviation has always been built on things people don't notice:

A calculation checked twice.
A component inspected carefully.
A decision made before the problem becomes serious.

So if your progress feels invisible right now

Good.

Not everything valuable needs an audience.

Build anyway. โœˆ๏ธ
