PhD position in the field of plant sciences/transcriptome analyses

Julich Research Centre (Forschungszentrum Julich GmbH), Germany

Your Job:
Crop plants are heavily exposed to the influence of climate change. Associated extreme temperatures as well as drought can negatively affect the yield and the quality of crops.
You will investigate the drought tolerance of ancient, domesticated crops and the influence of drought stress on accumulation of metabolites and on gene expression with particular focus on biosynthesis paths of secondary plant metabolites (flavonoids). Your tasks include the application of controlled stress treatments, phenotyping of stress responses with various sensors and gene expression studies in real time PCR as well as RNA sequences and transcription analyses with corresponding bioinformatic evaluations.
You will document your work and analyze and interpret the measured values obtained in the scientific context. You will present your results at project meetings and national and international conferences and publish them in scientific journals. Finally, you will summarize the results and publications you have obtained in your doctoral thesis.

Your Profile:
An academic degree in the field of biology, horticulture, agriculture, completed at least with the overall grade “good”
Knowledge and experience in plant cultivation under drought stress
Knowledge and experience in the phenotyping of plants
Practical experience in working with RNA (RNA extraction, RT-PCR, RNA sequencing)
Knowledge in programming languages like R or Python for data manipulation and analysis
Experience in quantifying plant metabolites with LC-MS
High level of self-sufficiency
Reliable and conscientious working style
Excellent communication skills for exchange with colleagues and cooperation partners
Impressed team capacity and the ability to cooperate cooperatively

PhD position - Environmental fate of BIO2PIM in agro-ecosystems

Julich Research Centre (Forschungszentrum Julich GmbH),  Germany

Your Job:
In both conventional and biodynamic agriculture, there is immense pest stress on cultivated plants which can be counteracted with biopesticides to secure crop yields. Even with optimal field application of biopesticides, soil and weeds are hit in addition to the target crops, directly or indirectly by wash-off/drift, similarly as happens with chemical pesticides. Furthermore, residues from the biopesticide-treated crops can be mixed into the soil. In addition to the active ingredients or active organisms, the fate of the formulation adjuvants or carriers must also be harmless after a period of action i.e. they should not have any negative impact on the environment.

Your Profile:
Excellent university degree (M.Sc.) in environmental chemistry, biogeochemistry, environmental science, agricultural science or a related field.
Good experience and willingness to work in the laboratory and perform laboratory and outdoor experiments independently.
Very good writing and communication skills in English.
Excellent ability for cooperative collaboration in a team with several working groups from different research institutions.
According to the mobility regulations of Marie-Sklodowska-Curie actions you must not have lived or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the last three years.

PhD Position - TheInfluence of Solid Surfaces on the Structure and Dynamics of Bio-Pesticide Formulations.

Julich Research Centre (Forschungszentrum Julich GmbH),  Germany

Your Job:
It is of outmost importance to understand the structure and dynamics formulations and their constituents in the proximity of solid surfaces since they are forced through narrow pipes and nozzles during spray deposition. To this end, you will
experimentally characterize formulations at rest and under shear, by means of scattering techniques with standard and with evanescent illumination and with confocal laser scanning microscopy
measure the static interaction potentials between formulation constituents with solid surfaces using total internal reflection microscopy
analyze and interpret your experimental results and publish them in international peer reviewed journals and on conferences

Your Profile:
Ideally you hold a M.Sc. degree for not longer than three years in physics, physical chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field with a specialization in soft matter science
You do not hold a doctoral degree
You have some experience in scientific programming. Experimental experience with light scattering and/or microscopy is not mandatory, but would be very helpful.
You speak and write proficiently in English, are communicative, enjoy working in a team and like to travel.
You have good organizational skills and the ability to work independently
According to the mobility regulations of Marie-Sklodowska-Curie actions you must not have resided or carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than months during the last three years.

PhD student: “Seamlessly simulating climate from the past into the future”
(4 years)

🔴University of Bern, Switzerland

Tasks
The P2F project aims to create a framework that uses new knowledge of past climatic conditions to project future climate change on spatio-temporal scales relevant for societies, ecosystems, and the planet as a whole. The PhD student will perform and analyze long-term transient climate model simulations of key periods (e.g., glacial-interglacials of the last 800 000 years, Mid-Plesitocene Transition) with an intermediate complexity Earth system model. The model will be paleo-calibrated by direct constraints from climate reconstructions, for which also new paleo-proxies will be implemented. These simulations will seamlessly continue into the future, and will be analyzed in detail especially with regard to the occurrence of abrupt transitions, previously unknown tipping points, and the quantification of committed climate change.

This project offers the opportunity to work with experts in past and future climate modeling, proxy reconstructions, and climate impact studies within the P2F project, the Climate and Environmental Physics division, and the Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research (www.oeschger.unibe.ch), providing an inspiring environment for Early Career Scientists in this field. The successful candidate will actively contribute to the new Global Biogeochemical Modeling Group, presenting results at international scientific conferences and publishing in the peer-reviewed literature.
Requirements
The successful candidate holds a MSc degree in Oceanography, Climate Science, Physics, or a related field, or will have completed the degree before the start of the project. The candidate should have a deep interest in climate modeling and possess advanced programming skills (e.g., in Python, Fortran, R) and data handling skills. Additionally, the candidate should have a passion for interdisciplinary and collaborative research and be proficient in both written and spoken English. Knowledge of past climate and how its reconstructed would be considered an advantage.
We offer
The envisaged starting date is 1st March 2025 or upon agreement. Employment conditions and remuneration are in accordance with the standards of the University of Bern, Switzerland. Secondments to the other project partners are planned.
For further information please contact Dr. Frerk Pöppelmeier (frerk.poeppelmeier@unibe.ch).
All applications received before 22nd November 2024 will be reviewed, and further applications will be considered until the position is filled. Please send your application documents in a single PDF-file including a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates, and contact information for two references by e-mail to Dr. Frerk Pöppelmeier (frerk.poeppelmeier@unibe.ch).
