This is the first time since 1991 that India has undertaken such a large-scale transfer of gold reserves.
In 1991’s balance of payment crisis, we had to pledge our gold to the UK and Japan to raise funds. After that incident, this move holds a great meaning to India!
Around 15 years ago, RBI purchased 200 tonnes of gold from the IMF. Since then, India has been consistently building up its gold reserves. However, most of this gold is being reserved in foreign vaults only.
Moving the gold from the UK to India is expected to help us in multiple ways.
✅ Strengthening National Reserves: This transfer significantly bolsters India's financial reserves, showcasing strong economic foresight.
✅ Logistics and Diversification: The move will ensure better security and management of national assets.
✅ Economic Sovereignty: A step towards enhancing India's economic sovereignty, reducing reliance on foreign vaults.
Following this move, India will now hold most of its gold in its own vaults.
