Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially renamed Mount Harriet, a prominent peak in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, as Mount Manipur, in a solemn tribute to the freedom fighters and soldiers of Manipur who made immense sacrifices during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
The renaming honours Maharaja Kulachandra Dhwaja Singh and the 22 other Manipuri warriors who were exiled by the British to this peak after the war.
Mount Manipur not only holds symbolic importance for its colonial past, but it is also home to the Mount Manipur Memorial and the Mount Manipur National Park, both of which commemorate the bravery of those who resisted colonial rule.
This renaming is being seen as a heartfelt act of restoring historical memory and respect, recognising Manipuri martyrs, and giving them a place of lasting honour in Indiaโs story of freedom.
