Rajendra Chola I, one of the greatest rulers of the Chola dynasty, expanded his empire far beyond the Indian subcontinent. His powerful navy secured trade routes and established diplomatic and cultural links that flourished for centuries. To commemorate this remarkable achievement, the Government of India issued the pure silver coin—40 grams of 99.9% silver, 44 mm in diameter, and bearing a face value of ₹1000.
The obverse of the coin carries the Lion Capital of Ashoka with the value “₹1000”, while the reverse showcases an artistic depiction of the Chola naval expedition, inscribed in both English and Hindi.
Unveiling the coin during the Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, PM Modi highlighted the Chola dynasty’s contributions to India’s golden age—its naval supremacy, temple architecture, cultural patronage, and even democratic governance through the ancient “kudavolai” system. He also announced the installation of statues of Rajaraja Chola I and Rajendra Chola I in Tamil Nadu, underscoring their enduring legacy.
For collectors, this is not just a coin; it’s a timeless piece of history symbolizing India’s maritime pride, Tamil heritage, and a millennium of cultural influence.
