A group of women from the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK) in Salem, Tamil Nadu, have been challenging traditional norms by carrying dead bodies and performing burial rituals, which are usually restricted to men. This movement started in 2004 and has faced social resistance, with some women even being shunned by their families. Inspired by social reformer E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar), they aim to break gender barriers and fight superstitions. Over the past 15 years, they have buried over 100 bodies across Tamil Nadu.
