Why in the News: Lake-effect snow warnings have been issued across parts of Ohio, New York, and Pennsylvania.


➢ About Lake-Effect Snow:

✔️ Lake-effect snow is a localized weather phenomenon caused by the interaction of cold air moving over warmer lake water, resulting in snow being deposited in specific regions downwind of the lake.

✔️This phenomenon frequently occurs in the Great Lakes region during late fall and winter

Lake-effect snow happens when cold air moves over a warmer lake. The warm water adds heat and moisture to the cold air, causing it to rise. As the air cools, clouds form, and heavy snow falls on the downwind side of the lake. This usually happens in winter near large lakes, like the Great Lakes.

Factors influencing lake-effect snow:

✔️Temperature Difference: Big difference between cold air and warm lake water.
✔️Lake Water: Warmer, unfrozen water adds moisture to the air.
✔️Wind Direction: Winds blowing across the lake carry moisture.
✔️Fetch: Longer wind travel over the lake increases snowfall.
✔️Land Features: Hills or mountains make air rise, causing more snow.
✔️Lake Size: Bigger lakes produce more snow.

All these factors decide how much and where the snow will fall.
