What is Katchatheevu Issue?
Katchatheevu is a small, uninhabited island in the Palk Strait, located between India and Sri Lanka.
It is historically significant to Tamil Nadu fishermen (from India) for fishing grounds and the island's St. Anthony's Church festival.
The Core of the Issue
Disputed Ownership: Katchatheevu was originally part of the zamindari (landholding) of the Raja of Ramnad (in modern-day Tamil Nadu). The island was administered by British India and later became part of India after independence in 1947.
1974 and 1976 Agreements: To settle the boundary dispute, India and Sri Lanka signed agreements in 1974 and 1976. The 1974 agreement ceded Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka.
