can a person be PATRIOT  without being a NATIONALIST lets find out step by step
Okay let me say what i mean:

Patriotism is not a proper ideology or set of ideologies. It is more of a sentiment, or a single principle.

Patriotism put simply is, "you do or try to do what's best for your nation in whatever capacity", end of story.

Nationalism on the other hand is Patriotism+ other conditions.

Nationalism, unlike patriotism is a proper ideology that brings with itself a baggage of conditions that may:
•Enhance one's patriotism ie make it more effective,
•Or, have no effective at all ie redundant,
•Or, might even hurt the cause, ie contradictory.

Simplicity of patriotism makes it purely goal oriented. While nationalism has it's two feet in different boats because it is committed both the certain goal and a certain method at the same time. And hence, there is a risk of the method overriding the goal itself. So what is this method that we are talking about?

Before we move further and talk about the method in question, Time for some more terms and definitions:

Nation is a group of people, politically identified as one unit on the basis of some shared commonality (this commonality can be anything such as race, religion, language, ethnicity)

State is an institution. It is a legal entity that claims and exercises a monopoly of legitimate violence over a given geographical territory.

Country: a geographical territory(or territories) politically unified by a single legal entity ruling over it known as state.

So nation is people, state is a legal institution, and country is geographical territory. Clear?

Now, the Nation-state: a state based on the concept of nationalism.

Nationalism: a political ideology that claims and insists that a given country should be ruled by a state that is for and of the people of a given nationality.
___

This might seem too technically stringent but this exercise in definitions is necessary for clarity of thought. Nation, state, and country are the words often used interchangeably in commonspeak, and that leads to muddled thoughts. For a true understanding of anything, Context is the King.

A Nation-state is formed on the claim of serving the interest of a nation.
Pakistan for Muslims.
France for french.
England for Englishmen.

Now nationalism can be of various types:

Linguistic: whoever speaks this language is part of the nation

Religious: whoever accepts this religion is part of the nation

Ethno/racial: whoever is part of this lineage is part of the nation

And so on and so forth...So you see, there are various categories of nationalism depending on how you identify people and what aspect of their identity you hold politically most important.

Endgoal of all nationalisms is to demand the formation of a new nation state, either through secession from a preexisting state.
Or unification [example may be Germany or Italy] of two or more preexisting states. Or throwing people not belonging to the given "nationality" out of the preexisting country and state.

So whatever you consider as your nation is subjective, Patriotism simply demands you serve it your best.
But Nationalism adds the baggage of forming a nation-state on top of it.

Now consider the possibility that may be formation of a nation-state is not in best interest of your nation.
Example is PAKISTAN.

What if, the method contradicts the goal?
like INDIA

What if, you and your nation are/were (or would be) better off as a part of a Union or Federation or may be even an Empire?.
like USSR

It depends on the conditions of a given time and place and people. Nationalism may not be suited for every nation, everywhere, all the time.
