🔶 Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO): A Tropical Rainfall Driver

📍What is MJO?
The Madden–Julian Oscillation is a tropical atmospheric phenomenon involving a moving system of clouds, winds, and pressure that travels eastward along the equator, bringing phases of rainfall or dryness.
It was first discovered in 1971 by Roland Madden and Paul Julian at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Colorado.
The MJO completes one global cycle in 30–60 days, sometimes extending up to 90 days.

📍Key Characteristics
Two Zones:
 • 🔹 Active Phase – Enhanced rainfall, strong convection
 • 🔹 Suppressed Phase – Inhibited convection, dry conditions
Eastward Movement: Travels at 4–8 m/s, mainly between 30°N and 30°S
It influences major tropical weather systems, such as:
 • Indian monsoons 🌧️
 • Formation and intensification of cyclones 🌪️
 • Dry spells and heavy rainfall events 🌦️

📍Phases & Their Impact
During the Active Phase:
 • Increased cloud formation ☁️
 • Strong convection and thunderstorm activity ⛈️
 • Higher-than-average rainfall in affected areas
During the Suppressed Phase:
 • Reduced convection
 • Decrease in rainfall or prolonged dry spells 🌤️

📍Why It Matters for India
The MJO’s position and strength can modulate the Indian monsoon, affecting both timing and intensity.
Understanding MJO phases helps improve weather forecasting and disaster preparedness — particularly for monsoon planning and cyclone warnings.

The one who scores the highest marks, say 786, will go abroad, and there he will get a good job, and he will design miss!les for them. And then we ask why our India is not progressing, why India is still in the line of developing countries, while the ones with the highest marks go to America, Russia, China, and design systems for them.
