It is held at the Vadakkunnathan Temple, dedicated to Lord Vadakkunnatha (Shiva), every year in the Malayalam Calendar month of Medam (April-may)
Initiated by Raja Rama Varma, also known as Sakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Cochin (1790–1805)
largest & most famous of all poorams in India
50 decorated elephants with the traditional music of Chenda Melam & Pancha Vadyam marks the main attraction of the festival.
