1) Gene plunder refers to the unauthorized extraction of genetic resources from developing countries without fair compensation to local communities.

2) The term is used to describe the legal acquisition of genetic materials through international treaties and agreements.

3) Gene plunder often leads to the monopolization of biological resources by multinational corporations at the expense of indigenous knowledge and biodiversity.

What is Digital Biopiracy?🧬🧪🧫

Definition: Digital biopiracy
involves using digital technologies, such as sequence databases, to exploit genetic resources without adhering to prior informed consent (PIC) and benefit-sharing norms.

Monopolization: It allows
organizations to monopolize research and development (R&D) outcomes through intellectual property (IP) rights, bypassing ethical standards set by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

Digital Sequence Information (DSI): DSI consists of
genetic sequence data derived from DNA or RNA of various organisms, which can be used for research and product development without needing access to the physical materials.

Synthetic Biology Impact:
Advances in synthetic biology enable the use of DSI for creating products like vaccines and therapeutics, often without consent from the original resource providers.

Concentration of Control:
Major DSI databases are predominantly controlled by developed countries, limiting developing nations' ability to benefit from their own genetic resources.

Risks: The misuse of DSI
poses risks such as bioterrorism and undermines national sovereignty over genetic resources, as databases often lack accountability and verification of compliance with PIC norms.

the food safety department seized artificially colored poisonous potatoes being sold at inflated prices, highlighting a significant food fraud issue.

These potatoes were reportedly treated with ammonia and soil to enhance their appearance, posing serious health risks, including kidney damage due to harmful chemicals used in the process.

The chemicals used in the preparation of poisonous potatoes include:

Solanine: A toxic glycoalkaloid found in high concentrations in green or sprouted potatoes.

Ammonia: Used in the treatment process to enhance appearance.

Chlorophyll: While harmless, its presence indicates increased solanine production due to exposure to light.
