โšก๏ธWhat is Bioluminescence ?

Major Points about Bioluminescence:

1. Cause: Produced by certain marine organisms, mainly microscopic plankton called dinoflagellates.

2. How it works:
   - Light is emitted through a reaction between the luciferase enzyme and luciferin compound in the presence of oxygen.

3. Purpose in marine life:
   - Used by animals to evade predators, attract prey, or during mating.

4. Common organisms: Seen in sponges, jellyfish, fish, worms, and other marine creatures.

5. Visibility:
   - Occurs at night due to the dinoflagellates' circadian (24-hour) cycle.
   - Best visible in warm weather and low light conditions.

6. Locations in India:
   - Seen at Havelock Island (Andamans), Thiruvanmiyur Beach (Chennai), Mattu Beach (Karnataka), and Bangaram Island (Lakshadweep).

7. Occurrence: Also widespread in deep sea and visible in lagoons or near breakwaters.
