The British-owned bulk carrier Rubymar has now sunk.
It’s the first ship to be sunk by the Houthis.
It was carrying more than 41,000 tons of fertilizer.
This isn’t just an ecological disaster. Around the Bab-El-Mandeb straits it can become the beginning of a maritime route problem. If multiple ships are sunk there it’ll impeded traffic’s.

Nutrient Pollution: Fertilizers contain nutrients like nitrates and phosphates. When they leak into the ocean, they can lead to nutrient pollution, causing excessive algae growth. This can result in algal blooms, which deplete oxygen levels in the water, leading to dead zones where marine life cannot survive.

Harm to Marine Life: Algal blooms can harm marine life by blocking sunlight and depleting oxygen, leading to fish kills and other negative impacts on aquatic ecosystems.

Contaminant Release: Fertilizer ships may also carry other chemicals or fuels. If the ship sinks, these contaminants can be released into the ocean, further damaging marine habitats and species.
